Drone photography & video in Wyandotte

Aerial photography in Wyandotte starts at the Detroit River: riverfront homes, Bishop Park, BASF Waterfront Park and the downtown blocks along Biddle Avenue. The airspace is open below 400 feet, so the planning centers on the international border offshore, the parks and the crowds that come for the art fair.

Airspace

Flying in Wyandotte

FAA data shows no controlled airspace at the surface anywhere we checked in Wyandotte, so a Part 107 flight below 400 feet needs no LAANC authorization. The limits here are the Canadian border in the river and who owns the launch site.

  • We sampled FAA Class Airspace and UAS facility map data at downtown Biddle Avenue, City Hall, Bishop Park, the north end, the west side near Fort Street and the south end at Wyandotte Shores. Every point is uncontrolled Class G at the surface, with Class E starting 700 ft above ground and no LAANC grid.
  • Detroit Metro (DTW) is about 9 nautical miles west of City Hall. Its Class B airspace sits overhead, but the shelf over Wyandotte starts at 2,500 ft MSL, far above the 400 ft Part 107 ceiling.
  • Grosse Ile Municipal Airport (ONZ), about 6 nautical miles south of City Hall, has no controlled airspace at the surface in FAA data. We still watch for its traffic when working the south end and the river.
  • The Canadian boundary runs through the Detroit River off Wyandotte, and Fighting Island, directly across, is Canadian land in LaSalle, Ontario. Transport Canada requires a foreign pilot flying a drone of 250 grams or more in Canada to hold a Canadian drone pilot certificate, plus a special flight operations certificate for commercial work, so we keep the aircraft on the U.S. side.
  • Temporary flight restrictions can be issued for events and security operations, so we check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight.

What Wyandotte businesses film from the air

Almost every aerial photography job in Wyandotte comes back to the river. A riverfront home or condo sells on its view, and a drone photographer can show the lawn, the seawall, the dock and the shipping lane in one frame. Restaurants and shops on Biddle Avenue use drone video to show how close they sit to the water and the parks. Wedding hosts on the waterfront want establishing shots, and marinas and boating businesses want the river itself. Farther from the water, commercial and industrial owners use aerials for leasing and site records.

Open airspace, a border in the river

Wyandotte’s airspace is open. We sampled the FAA’s Class Airspace and UAS facility map data from the north edge to Wyandotte Shores Golf Course, and every point is uncontrolled Class G at the surface with no LAANC grid. Detroit Metro sits about 9 nautical miles west, and its Class B shelf over the city starts at 2,500 feet MSL. A drone videographer working under Part 107 below 400 feet needs no FAA authorization here.

The line that matters runs down the river. The international boundary passes through the Detroit River off Wyandotte, and Fighting Island, directly across, is Canadian. BASF describes it as a 1,500-acre island on the Canadian side of the river in LaSalle, Ontario. Transport Canada requires a Canadian drone pilot certificate for any foreign pilot flying a drone of 250 grams or more in Canada, and a special flight operations certificate for commercial work, with 60 business days listed for medium-complexity commercial applications. So we keep the aircraft over the U.S. side and let the lens reach across.

Parks, the plant and the art fair

The riverfront is mostly city parkland and private property. Bishop Park, which the city lists at 12.2 acres with a large fishing pier, and BASF Waterfront Park, south of Eureka on Biddle, are both run by the city, so commercial launches there get cleared first. BASF’s industrial property along the river is private, and we film it only when the owner has hired or approved the shoot. About 10 miles south, Lake Erie Metropark allows drones under Rule 28, but not over bathhouses, not near bald eagles and only with notice to Grosse Ile Municipal Airport.

July is the busiest week downtown. The city says the 2026 Wyandotte Street Art Fair, the 65th, ran July 8 to 11 on Biddle Avenue between Eureka and Oak with 300 artists and over 200,000 visitors. Part 107 limits flights over people, so event aerials that week are planned around the crowd.

Light and seasons

The river runs along the city’s east side, so morning sun rises over the water and lights the river-facing side of homes and parks. By late afternoon the sun is behind the city, and its low light warms Fighting Island and the far shore. Summer brings boats and full green parks. Fall color along the shoreline works well for listings. Wind on the open river is often stronger than it feels on Biddle, so we check gusts before every launch and hold a backup date.

Permissions

Where to launch in Wyandotte

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Bishop Park

The city lists Bishop Park, on Van Alstyne at Elm Street, as a 12.2-acre riverfront park open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a large fishing pier. It is a city park, so we clear any commercial launch with the city before we fly there.

BASF Waterfront Park

The park sits on Biddle Avenue south of Eureka, next to the city's Wyandotte Shores Golf Course. The city's capital plan notes that weddings are held at the park's gazebo each year, so we coordinate around bookings and keep flights off guests who are not part of the shoot.

Lake Erie Metropark

About 10 miles south in Brownstown, the Metropark's 1,607 acres and three miles of shoreline fall under Metroparks Rule 28: no flights over beach or pool bathhouses, no disturbing bald eagles, and notice to Grosse Ile Municipal Airport, which is on the Metroparks airport list and about 3 miles away.

Riverfront homes and marinas

Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not let a pilot launch from someone else's lawn or dock. We launch only where the owner has given permission.

FAQ

Drone questions in Wyandotte

Do I need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Wyandotte?
Not below 400 feet at the points we checked. FAA data shows Wyandotte is uncontrolled Class G at the surface, from downtown to the south end, with no LAANC grid. Detroit Metro's Class B shelf overhead starts at 2,500 feet MSL. We still check B4UFLY on the day for temporary restrictions.
Can the drone fly out over the Detroit River toward Canada?
Only on the U.S. side. The international boundary runs through the river, and Fighting Island across from Wyandotte is Canadian. Flying there would need a Canadian drone pilot certificate and a special flight operations certificate from Transport Canada, so we frame the Canadian shore from our side.
Can you fly a drone at the Wyandotte Street Art Fair?
Not over the crowd. The city says the fair draws over 200,000 visitors to Biddle Avenue between Eureka and Oak Streets, and Part 107 limits flying over people. For event coverage we plan launch points and flight paths away from the public and confirm there are no restrictions that day.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Wyandotte?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots work from our studio at 2200 Hunt St in Detroit, about 18 miles from Wyandotte City Hall by road, or roughly half an hour without heavy traffic. Send your address and date window and we will confirm the schedule.
How much does drone photography cost in Wyandotte?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the site, the deliverables and how many locations the shoot covers.
