What Westland businesses film from the air
Westland is a large residential city with retail corridors running through it, and aerial photography here follows that mix. Westland Center, at Wayne and Warren roads, is the best-known site in town, and it is in a period of change. FOX 2 Detroit reported in March 2026 that the mall was about 35 percent occupied and that a consulting firm had been hired to gather ideas for its future, with residents asking for mixed-use redevelopment. Owners and developers in that position need clean aerials of the site, the access roads and the surrounding neighborhoods. Retail and service businesses along Ford Road and Wayne Road use drone video for leasing and storefront content, and real estate agents use it to show a home’s distance to Hines Park.
Where the Class B line runs
Westland is one of the cities where the FAA paperwork changes inside city limits. According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Detroit Metro’s Class B airspace reaches the ground over the south and central city, including Central City Park at Ford Road and the Westland Center site. There a drone pilot needs LAANC authorization, and the FAA facility map allows 400 feet across most of the city, stepping down to 350 and 250 feet in the southeast grids closest to the airport.
The boundary runs on a diagonal across the north side, from around Ford Road on the far west to just south of Hines Drive on the east. City Hall on Warren Road sits right on that line. North of it the surface is uncontrolled Class G up to 700 feet, so a drone videographer flying below 400 feet needs no LAANC there. We check the exact address on the FAA map before we quote.
Hines Park and the county
The most scenic ground in Westland belongs to Wayne County. Hines Park follows the Middle Rouge through the city, and the county runs the whole park system from the Nankin Mills building on Ann Arbor Trail. The county’s permit page says anyone shooting a film or commercial in its parks needs a commercial advertising permit, and it is issued from that same office. The airspace inside the park splits too: Merriman Hollow and Valley View are just inside the Class B surface area, while Nankin Mills is outside it.
Timing matters as much as permission. During the county’s Saturday in the Park season, six miles of Hines Drive from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive close to cars every Saturday and fill with runners and cyclists. Part 107 limits flying over people, so we book park aerials on weekdays.
Light and seasons
Fall color along the Middle Rouge is the strongest backdrop Westland has. For retail and redevelopment sites, midday light shows roofs, lots and access clearly, and the first and last hour of sun add depth to wide, flat parcels. Winter’s low sun is useful for construction progress because it shows grade changes.
Planning a Westland shoot
Send the address, date window and what the footage needs to do. We check which side of the Class B line the site is on, file LAANC where needed, line up county or owner permission and then send a fixed quote.
