What Taylor businesses film from the air
Taylor is a retail and commercial city, and most aerial photography here serves property. Southland Center, the mall on Eureka Road, anchors a corridor of stores, restaurants and pad sites that need clean overhead views of access, parking and signage for leasing. Commercial and industrial owners near the airport want the same for their buildings and yards. The city’s two public courses, Lakes of Taylor and Taylor Meadows, use drone video to show the layout of a hole in a way a ground camera cannot. Real estate agents use aerials to place a home near parks, schools and the freeways.
Every flight here starts with LAANC
Detroit Metro sits about 4 nautical miles west of Southland Center, and according to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, its Class B surface area covers every point we sampled in Taylor. A drone pilot in Taylor needs FAA authorization for any commercial flight, which we request through LAANC.
What shapes the shot list is the ceiling. The FAA’s UAS facility map sets the most LAANC can approve on each grid, and in Taylor it falls as you move west toward the runways. We found 350 feet near the eastern edge, 300 feet around Ecorse and Telegraph, 250 feet at Southland Center and Heritage Park, 200 feet at Taylor Meadows, 150 feet at Lakes of Taylor and near Inkster Road, and 100 feet in the southwest corner. A drone videographer can make strong work at 150 feet, but a wide, high reveal of a west-side site does not fit that grid, so we redesign the coverage or file a separate FAA request well ahead of the date.
Parks, courses and permission
Several of Taylor’s best aerial subjects are city facilities. Heritage Park, at 12111 Pardee Road, takes in the Coan Lake Historical Area, the Taylor Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a petting farm and pavilions, and both golf courses are listed under the city’s golf department. We clear any commercial launch on those properties with the city first. Heritage Park also has a petting farm and a pond, so we keep the aircraft well away from the animals and the people fishing. Southland Center and the stores around it are private, and we fly there only for the owner or with written permission.
Heritage Park is also where the city holds the Taylor Summer Festival, which in 2026 ran June 25 to 28 with carnival rides, concerts and fireworks, according to the city. Part 107 limits flying over people, so festival coverage is planned from the edges of the crowd, and routine park shoots avoid that week.
Light and seasons
Taylor’s subjects are wide and flat: roofs, parking fields, fairways and ponds. Early morning and the last hour before sunset add shadow and depth that a flat site needs. Golf courses look best from late spring into early fall, with dew or low sun showing the shape of the greens. Retail leasing shots usually work best at midday on a clear weekday, when signs are lit evenly and lots show real traffic without weekend crowds.
Planning a Taylor shoot
Send the address, date window and what the footage needs to do. We check the FAA grid ceiling for that block, file LAANC, confirm the property owner and then send a fixed quote.
