What Canton businesses film from the air
Canton Township is a large, mostly suburban community, and its aerial work reflects that. Retailers, restaurants and landlords along the Ford Road corridor want the storefront, the parking field and the road frontage in one frame. Home builders use overviews and lot shots to sell communities before the model homes are finished. Pheasant Run Golf Club and the township’s parks lend themselves to wide seasonal footage, and commercial property toward Haggerty Road and Michigan Avenue needs clean access and site views for leasing.
Three kinds of airspace in one township
Canton shows why we check airspace by address, not by city name. According to the FAA’s Class Airspace and UAS facility map data:
- On the north side, including the Ford Road corridor, IKEA Canton and the area around Warren Road, the surface is uncontrolled Class G, with Detroit Metro’s Class B floor 3,000 feet above sea level. No authorization is needed below 400 feet.
- The township center and southwest, including Heritage Park, Summit on the Park and Pheasant Run, fall inside Willow Run Airport’s (YIP) Class D. LAANC ceilings are 400 feet at Heritage Park and 200 feet near Lilley and Cherry Hill.
- The southeast corner, along Haggerty Road between Cherry Hill and Michigan Avenue, is inside Detroit Metro’s (DTW) Class B from the ground up, with LAANC available to 400 feet at the points we checked.
Canton-Plymouth-Mettetal Airport (1D2), a small non-towered field on Lilley Road, adds manned traffic to the north side even though the airspace there is uncontrolled. Part 107 requires the drone to give way, so we plan north side flights with a visual observer.
Parks, Liberty Fest and permission
Michigan’s drone law, PA 436 of 2016, keeps townships from writing their own rules on how drones fly, but Canton still controls how its parks are used. The township asks for a Community Event Interest Form for large events and for Preservation Park and the Heritage Park Gazebo and Amphitheater, and we contact the parks department before staging any commercial shoot on township land.
Canton Liberty Fest, which the township has held since 1991, brings thousands of people into Heritage Park for three days each June. That is a Class D location with a large open-air crowd, so it takes LAANC, organizer approval and a flight path along the edge of the grounds. South of the township, Lower Huron Metropark sits inside Detroit Metro’s surface Class B, and parts of it are within 5 miles of Detroit Metro, where Metroparks Rule 28 requires notice to the airport operator and tower before a flight.
Light and seasons
Canton’s open layout rewards low sun: early morning and the hour before sunset give long shadows that separate rooftops, fairways and parking fields that look flat at midday. Spring and summer footage shows lawns and trees at their fullest for model homes and amenities. Fall brings color to the park and golf course tree lines. Winter snow makes clean graphic overviews of subdivisions and retail lots, with shorter flights to protect batteries.
