Drone photography & video in Ypsilanti

Ypsilanti aerial photography covers the historic Michigan Avenue downtown, Depot Town along the Huron River, rental property around Eastern Michigan University and the industrial and lakefront land toward Willow Run. Most of the city sits inside Willow Run Airport's Class D airspace, and EMU asks for two weeks' notice before any flight over its land, so our drone pilots start with the map, not the camera.

Airspace

Flying in Ypsilanti

Downtown Ypsilanti, Depot Town, EMU's main campus and Ford Lake sit inside Willow Run Airport's Class D airspace, so commercial drone flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. The ceiling is 400 feet over the old city and drops to zero near the airport.

  • Willow Run Airport (YIP), about 3.5 nautical miles east of downtown, has Class D airspace from the surface up to the floor of Detroit's Class B at 3,000 ft MSL. FAA data places downtown, Depot Town, Riverside Park, the Ypsilanti Water Tower and EMU's main campus inside it. LAANC is available.
  • FAA facility map ceilings (map effective Sept. 3, 2026) are 400 ft over downtown, Depot Town, Riverside Park and EMU's main campus, 200 ft at Ford Lake Park in Ypsilanti Township, and 0 ft at the American Center for Mobility on the Willow Run site next to the airport.
  • FAA data lists YIP's Class D hours as continuous, so there is no after-hours window when authorization falls away. We file LAANC for every flight inside it.
  • The Class D ends west of EMU's main campus. At Rynearson Stadium and on the far west side of campus, FAA data shows no controlled airspace at the surface, and in the gap before Ann Arbor's airspace begins no LAANC is needed below 400 ft.
  • Rynearson Stadium seats 30,200, according to EMU Athletics, and appears in the FAA's stadium list. On EMU home football game days, drones are barred within 3 nautical miles from one hour before kickoff to one hour after the game. By our measurements the water tower and main campus are about 1 nautical mile from the stadium and downtown and Depot Town about 1.8, so the whole old city is closed.

What Ypsilanti businesses film from the air

Ypsilanti’s aerial work splits into three areas. The old city, meaning the Michigan Avenue downtown and Depot Town across the Huron River, drives storefront, restaurant and mixed-use marketing, where a drone video shows how a building sits between the river, the parks and the historic blocks. The neighborhoods around Eastern Michigan University hold a large rental market, and a view from a few hundred feet shows a prospective tenant how short the walk to campus is. East and south, in Ypsilanti Township, Ford Lake and the industrial land toward Willow Run bring lakefront listings, logistics sites and construction projects that need repeat progress flights.

The Ypsilanti Water Tower is the landmark most clients ask about. The Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority says the 147 foot stone tower was completed in 1890 and was named an American Water Landmark in 1975. We shoot it from public or private land off campus, as part of a wider aerial photography frame.

Willow Run’s Class D covers the old city

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Willow Run Airport (YIP) has Class D airspace from the surface up to the floor of Detroit’s Class B at 3,000 feet MSL, and the FAA lists its hours as continuous. Our checks put downtown, Depot Town, Riverside Park, the water tower and EMU’s main campus inside it, so every commercial flight there needs FAA authorization, which we request through LAANC.

The facility map is simple in the old city and tight near the airport. Downtown, Depot Town and the main campus all allow 400 feet. Ford Lake Park drops to 200 feet, and the American Center for Mobility, on the Willow Run site beside the runways, is a 0 foot grid that needs a separate FAA request well ahead of any shoot. On the other side of town the Class D ends west of the main campus, and around Rynearson Stadium the surface airspace is uncontrolled.

EMU rules and game days

EMU’s drone policy, published July 20, 2026, applies to any flight from, on or over university property. Each flight needs approval through an application filed with the Office of Risk and Emergency Management two weeks in advance, with insurance documents, and the pilot must call EMU police before takeoff. We build that lead time into any quote that touches campus, and for properties next to it we launch from private land and stay off university property.

Rynearson Stadium seats 30,200, according to EMU Athletics, which puts it over the FAA’s 30,000 seat threshold for the stadium flight restriction. From one hour before kickoff to one hour after every EMU home football game, drones are barred within 3 nautical miles. By our measurements that circle covers the main campus, the water tower, downtown and Depot Town, while Ford Lake Park sits outside it at about 4 nautical miles. Our stadium TFR guide explains how the rule works.

Light and seasons

Fall color along the Huron River from Frog Island to Riverside Park is the strongest aerial season in Ypsilanti, and it overlaps with football, so we book weekdays and away weekends. Summer gives the best open water on Ford Lake for lakefront listings. For Depot Town and the Michigan Avenue storefronts, the hour after sunrise or before sunset gives even light on brick facades, and Part 107 allows twilight and night flights with anti-collision lighting when a restaurant or venue looks best lit up.

Planning an Ypsilanti shoot

Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. Our drone photographers check the YIP facility map grid, EMU property lines, the home football schedule and landowner permission before we quote. Permissions

Where to launch in Ypsilanti

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Eastern Michigan University

EMU's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Administrative Policy, published July 20, 2026, covers any drone flight from, on or over EMU property. Every flight must be authorized in advance through an application filed with EMU's Office of Risk and Emergency Management two weeks before the flight, with insurance documents, and the pilot must notify EMU police before takeoff.

Willow Run and the American Center for Mobility

The American Center for Mobility describes itself as a 500-acre campus and proving ground on the historic Willow Run site. It sits in a 0 ft facility map grid beside the airport, so any flight there needs both the owner's permission and a separate FAA request rather than routine LAANC.

Ford Lake and township parks

Ford Lake Park is a Ypsilanti Township park inside a 200 ft facility map grid. We ask the park owner before launching there and keep lakefront flights under that ceiling.

Downtown buildings and rentals

We launch from private property only with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Ypsilanti

Can you fly a drone in downtown Ypsilanti?
Yes, with FAA authorization. Downtown and Depot Town are inside Willow Run Airport's Class D airspace, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 400 feet. We do not fly there during EMU home football games, when the stadium flight restriction covers the old city.
Can you fly a drone over Eastern Michigan University?
Only with EMU's approval. Its drone policy requires an application to the Office of Risk and Emergency Management two weeks before any flight from, on or over university property, plus insurance documents and a call to EMU police before takeoff. For buildings next to campus we launch from private land and keep the flight path off EMU property.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Ypsilanti?
RAW Digital Group sends FAA Part 107 certified drone pilots and drone videographers to Ypsilanti from our Detroit studio for aerial photography and drone video. We handle the LAANC request, EMU coordination and landowner permission as part of the job.
How fast can you get a drone to Ypsilanti?
Our pilots are based at our Detroit studio, about 36 miles from downtown Ypsilanti, or roughly 45 minutes by car without traffic. Scheduling depends on the LAANC ceiling for your block, the EMU home football calendar and, for flights over campus, EMU's two-week approval window.
How much does drone photography cost in Ypsilanti?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. We confirm the airspace and permissions for your address before sending a fixed quote.
