What Waterford businesses film from the air
Waterford Township’s own master plan points to its frontage on 34 inland lakes, including Cass, Elizabeth and Watkins lakes, as what sets it apart in southeast Michigan. That is where most aerial photography here starts. A drone video of a lake home shows the frontage, the dock and the water in one pass, which is what a lakefront listing is really selling.
The other half of the work is commercial. Dixie Highway, Highland Road and Telegraph carry much of the township’s retail and service businesses, and their owners need clean aerial views of access, parking and signage. Oakland County International Airport itself is a business district. The county says more than 150 businesses operate there, and more than 600 aircraft are based on the field.
Controlled airspace across almost the whole township
According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Oakland County International Airport (PTK) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 feet MSL. When we overlaid that boundary on the Census township map, it covered about 97 percent of Waterford, missing only a strip along the eastern edge near Telegraph Road. The county ranks PTK as Michigan’s second busiest airport, with 154,944 takeoffs and landings in 2024, so this is working airspace.
What matters most on a Waterford shoot is the FAA UAS facility map ceiling for the exact block. Near the runways and on the lakes west and south of the field, the grids drop to 0 feet: Williams Lake, Maceday Lake, the Waterford shore of Cass Lake and nearly all of Elizabeth Lake came back at 0 in our checks, and Township Hall at 50 feet. LAANC cannot approve a 0 foot grid, so those flights need a separate FAA DroneZone request and more lead time. Farther east the ceilings rise to 300 to 400 feet around Drayton Plains, Loon Lake, Lake Oakland and Otter Lake, where a LAANC approval usually comes back in minutes.
State land, county parks and private shorelines
Two state properties touch Waterford. Dodge #4 State Park sits on the north shore of Cass Lake, which the Michigan DNR calls the largest inland lake in southeast Michigan at 1,280 acres. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, 3,745 acres according to the DNR, straddles the township’s western line. The DNR requires written permission for any commercial drone flight in a state park or recreation area.
Waterford Oaks, the county’s 199 acre park on Scott Lake Road, follows Oakland County Parks rules, which require a written permit for commercial photography or video on park property. On private lakefront we launch from the client’s parcel with written permission and keep the aircraft off neighbors’ yards and docks.
Light and seasons
Lake homes photograph best from late May into September, when docks are in and trees are full, and calm mornings keep the water flat. Early October adds color along the shorelines. Winter works for commercial property, where snow cleans up a busy lot, but short days shrink the window, and a DroneZone request for a 0 foot grid needs to be filed well before the date.
Planning a Waterford shoot
Whether you need a drone photographer for a listing or a drone videographer for a brand or construction piece, send the address, date window and what you need delivered. We check the PTK facility map grid for that block, whether the launch site is private, county or state land, and the owner’s permission before we quote.
