Airspace

Flying in Clarkston

The Class D airspace around Oakland County International Airport (PTK) reaches into downtown Clarkston and the southern part of Independence Township, where commercial flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. North of that line, including Pine Knob and Independence Oaks, the airspace is uncontrolled Class G.

  • PTK's Class D runs from the surface to 3,500 ft MSL. In FAA data, its northern edge crosses downtown Clarkston near Washington Street: City Hall on Depot Road and the south end of Main Street are inside, while the blocks just north of Washington are outside.
  • By our overlay of the FAA boundary on Census maps, roughly 60 percent of Clarkston's land and about a quarter of Independence Township, mostly its southern half, sit inside the Class D.
  • The FAA's UAS facility map sets a 400 ft ceiling over essentially all of the city, so LAANC can approve full-height flights downtown. Along the township's southern edge near the Waterford line, grids drop to 200 and 300 ft.
  • Pine Knob Music Theatre, Pine Knob's ski area on Sashabaw Road and Independence Oaks County Park are Class G at the surface in FAA data, with Class E from 700 ft above the ground. No LAANC is needed there below 400 ft.
  • Anything above a grid's ceiling needs a separate FAA DroneZone request, and airspace changes, so we check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight.

What Clarkston businesses film from the air

Clarkston is small, under half a square mile of land by Census Bureau measure, but its setting is what draws aerial work. The town grew around the Mill Pond. The Clarkston Community Historical Society says the Clark brothers dammed the Clinton River in 1838 to power a gristmill, and the dam became Washington Street. The village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and residents voted in 1992 to incorporate as a city, according to the M-15 Pure Michigan Byway. For downtown restaurants and shops, drone video shows the pond, the historic storefronts on Main Street and the trees in one frame.

Most of the market lies in Independence Township around it. Lake homes, wooded lots and new subdivisions show better in aerial photography that shows water, frontage and privacy. Pine Knob brings both winter and summer work, with a ski hill on Sashabaw Road and an amphitheater that 313 Presents lists at 15,040 capacity. Independence Oaks, with its 68-acre Crooked Lake and the Twin Chimney Shelter that the county says is popular for weddings, is a common setting for venue and event content. The county also says Independence Oaks is the 24th site in Michigan recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network.

The Class D line through downtown

In Clarkston, controlled airspace runs through the middle of downtown. According to FAA data, Oakland County International Airport’s Class D ends near Washington Street. City Hall on Depot Road and the south end of Main Street are inside it, while the Mill Pond blocks just north are outside. We file LAANC for any flight that could cross the line.

The ceiling is generous. The FAA’s UAS facility map allows 400 feet over nearly the whole city, so most downtown shots need only a quick LAANC approval. The lower grids, 200 and 300 feet, sit along the township’s southern edge near Waterford. Pine Knob and Independence Oaks are in open Class G airspace. Deer Lake sits only about a third of a mile north of the Class D line by our measurement, so shoots on its south shore get a closer check. Any flight that needs to go above a grid’s ceiling requires a separate FAA request through DroneZone, which takes far longer than LAANC, so we plan those shots early.

Venues, parks and state land

Pine Knob Music Theatre is off limits. Its operator, 313 Presents, says drones are prohibited inside or outside the venue, including the parking lots. Oakland County Parks allows drones that follow federal and state law, but commercial photos and video in its parks need a written permit. Indian Springs Metropark in White Lake Township requires notice to airports within 5 miles under its Rule 28, and Holly State Recreation Area to the northwest is DNR land that needs written permission for commercial flights.

Light and seasons

October color over the Mill Pond and the hills around Pine Knob is the season most people ask for. Winter snow suits ski and holiday content and gives lake homes clean lines. In summer, early morning keeps boats and crowds out of frame, and Part 107 limits flying over people at concerts and events.

Permissions

Where to launch in Clarkston

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Pine Knob Music Theatre

The amphitheater holds 15,040 people, according to operator 313 Presents, whose venue guide says drones flown inside or outside the venue, including the surrounding parking areas, are prohibited. Venue aerials happen only through the operator.

Independence Oaks and county parks

Oakland County Parks calls Independence Oaks its largest park, at 1,286 acres. The county's 2025 rules require drones to follow federal and state law, and require a written permit for photos or video made to advertise a product or service or that involve a cast or crew.

Indian Springs Metropark and Holly State Recreation Area

Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, bars flights over bathhouses and requires notice to airports within 5 miles, a list that includes Oakland County International. Holly State Recreation Area, more than 8,000 acres, is DNR land, where commercial drone use needs the department's written permission.

The village and private land

Michigan's PA 436 of 2016 settles who regulates the flight, but the ground under the takeoff point still belongs to someone. For downtown storefronts and lake homes we fly from private land with the owner's written permission.

FAQ

Drone questions in Clarkston

Do you need LAANC to fly a drone in downtown Clarkston?
It depends on the block. FAA data puts the Class D line for Oakland County International Airport right through downtown near Washington Street, so City Hall and the south end of Main Street need FAA authorization, while spots just north do not. The FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 400 feet there.
Can you fly a drone at Pine Knob Music Theatre?
No. The venue's guide from operator 313 Presents says drones are prohibited inside or outside the amphitheater, including the parking areas. Aerials of the venue have to be arranged with the operator.
Do I need a permit to film at Independence Oaks?
For commercial work, yes. Oakland County Parks requires a written permit for photos or video made to advertise a product or service or that involve a cast or crew. Drones there must also follow federal and state law.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Clarkston?
RAW Digital Group's drone photographers and videographers are FAA Part 107 certified pilots based at our Detroit studio who fly Clarkston, Independence Township and the rest of Oakland County. We file LAANC where the Class D applies and handle park and landowner permission.
How fast can you get a drone to Clarkston?
Downtown Clarkston is about 41 miles from our Detroit studio, roughly 45 to 50 minutes by road without traffic. Inside the Class D, a LAANC request up to the facility map ceiling is the only added FAA step, so weather and the property owner usually set the date.
How much does drone photography cost in Clarkston?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the location, permissions and what you need delivered.
