Airspace

Flying in Commerce Township

About 95 percent of Commerce Township is uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, where a Part 107 pilot needs no FAA authorization below 400 feet. The northeast corner, around Long Lake and the township's share of Union Lake, is inside Oakland County International Airport's Class D and needs LAANC or a separate FAA request.

  • Oakland County International Airport (PTK) in Waterford Township has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 ft MSL, according to the FAA's Class Airspace data. By our overlay of that boundary on the Census township map, it covers about 5 percent of Commerce Township, all in the northeast corner.
  • FAA UAS Facility Map grids (effective Sept. 3, 2026) in that corner run from 0 to 400 ft. About 80 percent of Long Lake sits under a 0 ft grid and the rest under 100 ft, and the Commerce side of Union Lake is also mostly 0 ft.
  • A 0 ft grid cannot be approved through LAANC. Those flights need a separate FAA DroneZone request, which takes much longer, so north-end lake shoots are booked with extra lead time.
  • Our point checks put Commerce Lake, Lower Straits Lake, Wolverine Lake, Township Hall, the Five & Main site, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital and Proud Lake Recreation Area in Class G with no facility map grid. Detroit Metro's Class B floor overhead is 6,000 ft MSL, far above any drone flight.
  • Airspace and temporary flight restrictions change. We recheck B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight.

What Commerce Township businesses film from the air

Commerce Township is a lake community that is building a downtown, and aerial work follows both threads. Lakefront homes on Commerce Lake, Lower Straits Lake and Long Lake need drone photography that shows frontage, docks and the water in one frame. Just north of M-5, the township’s Downtown Development Authority says it bought two golf courses and 50 acres of Metroparks land in 2004, 350 acres in all, with the goal of creating a downtown for Commerce Township.

The centerpiece is Five & Main, at Pontiac Trail and Martin Parkway. WXYZ reported it as a $150 million project with 275,000 square feet of space, including a boutique hotel, restaurants and shops, and Continental Properties opened its 284 unit Springs at Five & Main apartments there in September 2025. Projects on that scale use repeat drone video from fixed points to show owners and lenders how the site is moving, and finished buildings need aerial leasing content.

Mostly open airspace, with one controlled corner

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, most of Commerce Township is uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface. Our point checks put Commerce Lake, Lower Straits Lake, Wolverine Lake, Township Hall, the Five & Main site and Proud Lake Recreation Area in Class G with no FAA facility map grid, so no LAANC request is needed up to 400 feet.

The exception is the northeast corner. Oakland County International Airport (PTK), in Waterford Township, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 feet MSL, and when we overlaid it on the Census township map it covered about 5 percent of Commerce. That slice includes Long Lake and the township’s share of Union Lake, where most FAA grids are 0 feet. LAANC cannot approve those, so a Long Lake listing needs a separate FAA DroneZone request and more lead time than a shoot a mile south.

The Huron River and state land

Proud Lake Recreation Area, on the township’s west side, is the big piece of public land. The Michigan DNR describes it as about 3,000 acres on the Huron River, and the Huron River Water Trail lists Proud Lake as the launch point for a 4.5 mile paddle downstream to Milford. The DNR requires written permission for any commercial drone flight in a state park or recreation area, so business shoots there are cleared before a date is set. On private lakefront we launch from the client’s parcel with written permission and keep the aircraft off neighbors’ yards and docks.

Light and seasons

Lake homes look best from late May through September, with docks in and trees full, and calm mornings keep the water flat. October color along the Huron River corridor at Proud Lake is a strong reason to book a fall shoot. Construction clients usually want the same angles repeated on a set schedule through the building season, which is simpler here because most sites need no FAA request.

Planning a Commerce Township shoot

Whether you need a drone photographer for a listing or a drone videographer for a brand or construction piece, send the address, date window and what you need delivered. We check whether it falls in PTK’s Class D, whether the launch site is private, village or state land, and the owner’s permission before we quote. See our Detroit drone photography services, including construction drone photography and waterfront drone photography, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Commerce Township

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Proud Lake Recreation Area

The DNR describes Proud Lake as about 3,000 acres on the Huron River, with the river managed as a Type I trout stream. Its state park rules bar drone flights for a commercial purpose without written permission from an authorized DNR representative, and never over occupied beaches, campgrounds or equestrian facilities, so a paid shoot there waits on that permission.

Five & Main and new construction

Active sites have their own safety rules and access control. We fly construction progress only with the owner's or general contractor's written approval and a launch spot they designate, and we keep the flight path off crews working below.

Wolverine Lake and Walled Lake

The Village of Wolverine Lake sits inside Commerce Township, and the City of Walled Lake borders it to the south. A wide lake shot can cross several municipal lines, so we confirm who owns the launch site before the shoot.

Lake homes and hospital grounds

We launch from the client's property with written permission and keep the aircraft over their parcel and open water. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) makes capturing images in violation of a reasonable expectation of privacy a misdemeanor. Near DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital we stay off hospital grounds without approval and watch for medical helicopters.

FAQ

Drone questions in Commerce Township

Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Commerce Township?
Not in most of it. FAA data shows about 95 percent of the township, including Commerce Lake, Lower Straits Lake and the Five & Main area, in uncontrolled Class G airspace with no LAANC grid. Only the northeast corner around Long Lake and Union Lake is inside Oakland County International Airport's Class D.
Can you fly a drone over Long Lake in Commerce Township?
Only with extra FAA paperwork. About 80 percent of Long Lake sits under a 0 foot FAA facility map grid, which LAANC cannot approve, so the flight needs a separate FAA DroneZone request. We file it well ahead of the shoot date.
Where can I hire a drone photographer in Commerce Township?
Our drone photographers and videographers are FAA Part 107 certified pilots who work from our Detroit studio and fly Commerce Township on request. We check the address against the FAA map, confirm launch permission and plan around DNR land before we quote.
How fast can you get a drone to Commerce Township?
Commerce Township Hall is about 35 miles from our Detroit studio, roughly 45 minutes without traffic. Because most of the township is Class G, many shoots can be scheduled as soon as weather and the owner allow. Long Lake and Union Lake flights take longer because of the FAA request.
How much does drone photography cost in Commerce Township?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the property, the airspace and what you need delivered.
