What Pontiac businesses use aerials for
Pontiac grew around General Motors plants, and its biggest sites are being remade. The Pontiac Silverdome, home of the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001, is gone; Amazon opened a robotics fulfillment center on the site in 2021, according to WTVB. In the south end, M1 Concourse has turned 87 acres on Woodward Avenue into a motorsports venue with a 1.5-mile performance track, and United Wholesale Mortgage’s campus sits nearby.
Downtown is the newest story. The Detroit News reported in July 2026 that Oakland County’s Pontiac Project will move roughly 700 county employees into the old General Motors building at 31 E. Judson Street, reconnect Saginaw Street and Orchard Lake Road and add two parking decks and green space where the Phoenix Center amphitheater stood. The county targets fall 2027. That is a textbook case for monthly progress flights, and the finished blocks will need launch and leasing content for the venues, restaurants and small businesses around them.
Open airspace, with PTK on the west edge
Pontiac’s airspace is friendlier than its closeness to Oakland County International Airport suggests. According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, downtown, the former Silverdome site and M1 Concourse are uncontrolled Class G below 700 feet, with Detroit Metro’s Class B floor 4,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. No LAANC request is needed there.
The exception is the western edge. PTK sits about 3.8 nautical miles west of the city line in Waterford Township, and its Class D airspace reaches into Pontiac along Telegraph Road, including the west side of Pontiac Oaks Park. The FAA facility map allows LAANC requests up to 400 feet in that strip. Medical helicopters are part of any urban shoot, another reason we keep a visual observer on downtown flights. We confirm every address on the FAA map and check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day.
Permission on private and public land
Much of Pontiac’s aerial ground is private or under construction: a private track, an Amazon facility, a corporate campus and a county construction site. Pontiac Oaks is run by Oakland County Parks under a partnership with the city. Michigan’s PA 436 of 2016 stops local governments from regulating how drones fly, but it does not give anyone a right to launch from land they do not control. We line up written permission, a certificate of insurance and site safety rules before the shoot.
Light, seasons and events
Wide industrial and track subjects look best in low morning or evening light, when shadows give flat pavement and rooftops some shape. Pontiac Oaks, with its water access and trails, is at its best in October color. The Woodward Dream Cruise, held the third Saturday in August, runs through nine communities including Pontiac, according to ClickOnDetroit, which brings crowds, closed roads and demand for coverage. We plan those shoots around the crowd rather than over it.
