Drone photography & video in Lake Orion

Aerial photography and drone video in Lake Orion and Orion Township cover lakefront homes, the village downtown, parkland and the industrial corridor around GM's Orion Assembly plant. The airspace is open, but much of the township's best scenery sits on state and county park land with its own permission rules.

Airspace

Flying in Lake Orion

FAA data shows the Village of Lake Orion and all of Orion Township in uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, with no UAS facility map grids, so flights below 400 feet need no LAANC authorization. Only the township's far southwest corner comes near controlled airspace.

  • According to the FAA's Class Airspace data, the village downtown, the middle of Lake Orion, GM Orion Assembly and the township's southwest side are all Class G at the surface, with Class E from 700 ft above the ground.
  • We overlaid the FAA's UAS facility map on the Census boundaries for the village and the township and found no grids in either, which means no LAANC is needed anywhere in Orion Township below 400 ft.
  • Oakland County International Airport (PTK) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 ft MSL. By our measurement its boundary stays about 6.6 miles from the village, but it comes within about 0.6 miles of Orion Township's southwest corner, so addresses there get a closer check.
  • Bald Mountain Recreation Area has a radio-controlled model airplane flying field off Scripps Road, according to the DNR. We watch for model aircraft when working near it.
  • Temporary flight restrictions can appear on short notice, so the day-of check in B4UFLY or a LAANC app is part of every Orion Township job.

What Lake Orion businesses film from the air

The lake is the reason most people search for aerial photography in Lake Orion. The Lake Orion Downtown Development Authority puts the lake at more than 482 acres, and its resort-town past shows in the islands. The DDA says Bellevue Island once had hotels, and Orion Township says Park Island was home to an amusement park and dance hall. For lakefront listings, a drone shows frontage, docks, neighboring islands and the walk to downtown in a single shot. Downtown shops and restaurants use short drone video to show the village and the water together.

Orion Township, which surrounds the village, gives builders and agents more to work with. The township says it covers 36 square miles with more than 4,200 acres of parks and open space and 42 lakes larger than five acres. Industry is the other side of the market. GM said in June 2025 that it will begin building gas-powered full-size pickups and SUVs at Orion Assembly in early 2027, and suppliers and industrial properties in the area use aerial video for recruiting and facility marketing.

Open airspace across the township

We checked FAA data at the village, the lake, the GM plant and the township’s southwest side, then overlaid the FAA’s UAS facility map on the Census boundaries. All of it is Class G at the surface, and no LAANC grid falls inside the village or township. Oakland County International Airport’s Class D comes within about 0.6 miles of the township’s southwest corner, so addresses there get a closer look. Bald Mountain also hosts a model airplane flying field off Scripps Road, which is worth knowing before a flight nearby.

Open airspace makes scheduling simpler. With no LAANC request to file, a Part 107 flight can go up to 400 feet above the ground as soon as the weather, the landowner and any park permission line up. That does not remove the other federal rules, including keeping the drone in sight and staying clear of people, so we still check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day for temporary restrictions.

State, county and trail land

Much of the township’s green space belongs to someone with rules. Bald Mountain Recreation Area is Michigan DNR land, where commercial drone use needs the department’s written permission. Orion Oaks County Park covers 916 acres, according to Oakland County Parks, and the county’s rules require a permit for photos or video made to advertise a product or service. The Paint Creek Trail reaches Atwater Street in the village, and the trail commission owns that land. For a house on the lake or a building downtown, we launch from private property with the owner’s written permission.

Light, seasons and events

Summer is peak season for lake aerials, when boats are out and the shoreline is green. Early morning gives the calmest water and fewer boats in frame. Fall color across Bald Mountain’s hills makes strong backdrops for listings and brand work in October. Dragon on the Lake, hosted by the Orion Art Center, brought dragon boat races and crowds downtown in late August 2026. Part 107 limits flying over people, so event work is planned around the crowd.

Permissions

Where to launch in Lake Orion

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Bald Mountain Recreation Area

The DNR describes Bald Mountain as 4,600 acres of trails, inland lakes and some of the steepest terrain in southeast Michigan, with its entrance in Orion Charter Township. DNR rules require written permission from the department for any commercial drone use in a state park or recreation area, and bar flights within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites and over occupied beaches, campgrounds and equestrian facilities.

Orion Oaks County Park

Oakland County Parks' 2025 rules say drones must be flown in line with federal and state law. A separate rule requires a written permit for photos or video taken to advertise a product or service or that involve a cast or crew, so commercial shoots at Orion Oaks start with the county parks office.

Paint Creek Trail

The Paint Creek Trailways Commission owns the 8.9 mile trail, which reaches Atwater Street in the village. It is day use only, and we clear any launch from trail property with the Commission first.

Plants, homes and private land

GM Orion Assembly and the suppliers around it are private, secured sites. Michigan's PA 436 of 2016 covers who can regulate flight, not who can use a parking lot or a dock, so every launch site starts with the owner's written permission.

FAQ

Drone questions in Lake Orion

Do you need LAANC to fly a drone in Lake Orion?
No. FAA data shows the Village of Lake Orion and Orion Township in uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, with no LAANC facility map grids. A Part 107 pilot can fly up to 400 feet without authorization, though we still check for temporary flight restrictions on the day.
Can you fly a drone at Bald Mountain Recreation Area for a commercial shoot?
Only with written permission from the Michigan DNR, which its rules require for any commercial drone use in a state park or recreation area. Even with permission, drones cannot fly over occupied beaches, campgrounds or equestrian facilities, or within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites.
Can you get drone video of Lake Orion during Dragon on the Lake?
With care. The Lake Orion Review reports the 2026 festival ran Aug. 27 to 30 downtown, with dragon boat races on the lake. Part 107 limits flying over crowds, so festival aerials are planned from a launch site we control, with the flight path kept over water and open ground.
Where can I hire a drone videographer in Lake Orion?
RAW Digital Group's drone photographers and videographers are FAA Part 107 certified pilots based at our Detroit studio who work across Orion Township and northern Oakland County. We check airspace, park rules and landowner permission for every shoot.
How fast can you get a drone to Lake Orion?
Downtown Lake Orion is about 38 miles from our Detroit studio, roughly 45 minutes by road without traffic. With open airspace and no LAANC to file, scheduling usually comes down to weather and the property owner's approval.
How much does drone photography cost in Lake Orion?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the location, permissions and what you need delivered.
