Drone photography & video in Milford

Aerial photography and drone video in Milford cover the downtown shops and restaurants on the Huron River, homes and acreage across Milford Township, and the parkland of Kensington Metropark and nearby state recreation areas. The airspace is open Class G, so the planning here is about park permits, a small county airport to the south and the village's festival calendar.

Airspace

Flying in Milford

FAA data puts downtown Milford, Central Park, Kensington Metropark and the rest of Milford Township in uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, with no FAA UAS facility map grid. No LAANC authorization is needed to fly up to 400 feet.

  • According to the FAA's Class Airspace data, the surface over the village and township is Class G, with Class E starting 700 ft above the ground. Detroit Metro's Class B floor over most of the township is 6,000 ft MSL.
  • Oakland County International Airport's Class D does not reach Milford. PTK is about 9 nautical miles northeast of downtown by our measurement, and Commerce Township's lakes sit between them.
  • Oakland Southwest Airport (Y47) in New Hudson, a county-owned field the county says began operating in 1946, is about 5.3 nautical miles south of downtown and about 3 nautical miles from the middle of Kensington Metropark by our measurement. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace around it.
  • Class G still means small planes flying low near Y47. Part 107 requires drones to yield to crewed aircraft, so our pilots watch and listen for traffic throughout every flight near the south end of the township.
  • Airspace and temporary flight restrictions change. We recheck B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight.

What Milford businesses film from the air

Milford is a village built on a river bend. The Huron River Water Trail describes its historic core as sitting on both sides of a bend in the Huron River, where Pettibone Creek flows in. From the air, that means a shop, restaurant or office downtown can be shown with the river, Central Park and Main Street in the same frame, which is hard to get from the ground.

Beyond the village, aerial photography in Milford Township serves real estate on larger lots and around the lakes, where a drone shows acreage, tree lines and water frontage in a way a ground photo cannot. The parkland is the other draw. Kensington Metropark covers 4,481 acres around Kent Lake, according to the Metroparks, and its 8.5 mile paved loop has a 3.4 mile extension into Milford. We have filmed at Kensington Metropark.

Open airspace, with a county airport to the south

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, downtown Milford, Central Park, Kensington and the rest of the township sit in uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, with no FAA UAS facility map grid. There is no LAANC request to file and no ceiling below the Part 107 limit of 400 feet. Oakland County International Airport’s controlled airspace, which shapes every shoot in Waterford, ends well to the northeast.

The field to watch is Oakland Southwest Airport (Y47) in New Hudson. Oakland County says the airport began operating in 1946 as a training field for veterans and that the county bought it in 2000. It sits about 3 nautical miles from the middle of Kensington by our measurement, and FAA data shows no controlled airspace around it. That means no LAANC step, but light aircraft still use the field, so we keep a sharp lookout for low traffic on the south side of the township.

Parks, permits and state land

Most of the public land around Milford belongs to someone with its own rules. At Kensington, the Metroparks allow drones under Rule 28 but require a commercial filming permit, and because much of the park is within 5 miles of Oakland Southwest Airport, the rule calls for prior notice to the airport operator. Proud Lake Recreation Area upstream and Highland Recreation Area to the northeast are Michigan DNR land, where commercial drone flights need written DNR permission. We line up those approvals before we set a date.

Light, seasons and events

The Huron River and Kent Lake look best from late spring into early fall, and October color along the river and in the parks is the strongest reason to book a fall shoot. Calm mornings give the flattest water. Downtown fills for events the village lists across the year, including Milford Memories on the second full weekend of August, Thursday concerts at Central Park’s LaFontaine Family Amphitheater and a car show on the third Sunday of September. Part 107 limits flying over crowds, so event coverage uses a launch point we control and a flight path that stays off the people below.

Permissions

Where to launch in Milford

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Kensington Metropark

Huron-Clinton Metroparks Rule 28 permits drones under federal and state law, keeps them off bathhouses and away from protected wildlife such as bald eagles, and requires prior notice to the airport operator for flights within 5 miles of an airport. Oakland County Southwest Airport is on the Metroparks' list of airports for that rule. Rule 7 limits business activity in the parks to the Metroparks, its hires and licensees, and commercial filming permits go through the Kensington office.

Proud Lake and Highland recreation areas

Both are Michigan DNR land. The DNR's state park rules bar drone flights for a commercial purpose without written permission from an authorized DNR representative, and never over occupied beaches, campgrounds or equestrian facilities. Highland's radio-controlled flying field does not change that for a paid shoot.

Downtown and village parks

Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) keeps the village from regulating the flight itself, but it does not give a pilot the right to launch from village parks or private lots. We launch from a client's property or a spot we have permission to use, and we clear park use with the village first.

Homes and acreage

We fly residential listings with the owner's written permission, keep the aircraft over their parcel and avoid lingering over neighbors. PA 436 makes capturing images in violation of a reasonable expectation of privacy a misdemeanor.

FAQ

Drone questions in Milford

Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Milford, Michigan?
No. FAA data shows the village, Kensington Metropark and the rest of Milford Township in uncontrolled Class G airspace with no LAANC grid, so a Part 107 pilot can fly up to 400 feet without authorization. We still check for temporary flight restrictions on the day.
Can you fly a drone at Kensington Metropark for a business?
Yes, with the Metroparks' approval. Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, but commercial filming needs a permit through the Kensington office, and because much of the park is within 5 miles of Oakland Southwest Airport, the rule calls for prior notice to the airport operator. We line up those permissions before booking a date.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Milford?
Our drone photographers and videographers are FAA Part 107 certified pilots based at our Detroit studio who travel to Milford for each shoot. We confirm the airspace, the park or landowner permission and the event calendar before we quote.
How fast can you get a drone to Milford?
Downtown Milford is about 43 miles from our Detroit studio, just under an hour without traffic. With no FAA authorization needed in Class G, shoots on private property can be scheduled as soon as weather and the owner allow. Park shoots depend on permit timing.
How much does drone photography cost in Milford?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the location, permits and what you need delivered.
