What Northville businesses film from the air
Northville is small, about 2.2 square miles by the city’s count, and its aerial work follows its character. Agents listing homes in the Historic District want the house, the block and the walk to downtown in one sequence. Restaurants and shops on Main and Center streets want storefront and street scenes that show off the downtown. The biggest change in town is The Downs, the redevelopment of Northville Downs, which Construction Dive reported closed in February 2024 as Michigan’s last horse racing track. Builders, leasing teams and the city all have reasons to document that site as it fills in.
Open airspace over a two-county town
Northville straddles the Wayne and Oakland county line, and per the city, 2020 census counts put 3,326 residents on the Oakland side and 2,793 on the Wayne side. For a drone, the line does not matter. According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, downtown and The Downs are uncontrolled Class G at the surface, with Detroit Metro’s Class B floor 3,000 feet above sea level. Over Maybury State Park the Class B floor rises to 6,000 feet. There is no LAANC grid to request, which keeps scheduling simple. The controlled airspace of Willow Run and Detroit Metro starts to the south, in Canton.
Permits matter more than airspace here
The planning in Northville is about land, not air. Mill Race Village, the historic village run by the Northville Historical Society, requires a paid permit for commercial photo and video, wants applications a week ahead and closes to professional shoots on Sunday afternoons, during Society events and during weddings. Maybury State Park, the 1,000-acre state park west of town, falls under Michigan DNR rules that require written permission for any commercial drone use and bar flights over equestrian facilities, which matters at a park with a riding stable and 8 miles of horse trails.
Downs River Park, which the city opened on June 17, 2026 along a newly daylighted stretch of the Rouge River, is now public land, while the construction around it is private. Michigan’s drone law, PA 436 of 2016, keeps the city from regulating how drones fly, but each landowner decides who launches from its property, so we confirm the right contact for each launch point.
Light and seasons
Fall is a strong season for Northville aerials, when the trees in the Historic District, the Rouge corridor and Maybury turn and low afternoon light rakes across rooftops and hills. Winter snow on Victorian rooflines and a lit downtown make good twilight subjects, and Part 107 allows twilight and night flights with anti-collision lighting. Spring and summer suit The Downs, when new landscaping along the river has filled in.
