Drone photography & video in Flint

Aerial photography and drone video in Flint cover downtown's brick-street district, the Flint River corridor, two university campuses and the industrial and retail sites along the city's highways. Downtown and the west side sit inside Bishop International Airport's Class C airspace, so every shoot starts with an FAA authorization check and a look at university property lines.

Flying in Flint

Downtown Flint, UM-Flint, Kettering University and the Cultural Center are inside Bishop International Airport's Class C surface area, so commercial flights there need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. Much of the east and north side sits outside that area, where no authorization is needed below 400 feet.

  • Bishop International Airport (FNT), about 4 miles southwest of Flint according to FAA airport records, has Class C airspace from the surface to 4,800 ft MSL. FAA data places downtown, the Flint Farmers' Market, UM-Flint, Kettering University, the Flint Cultural Center and the Hurley Medical Center area inside that surface area.
  • LAANC is available for FNT. FAA facility map ceilings are 400 ft over downtown, UM-Flint and the Cultural Center, 200 ft at Kettering University and 0 ft at Genesee Valley Center, closer to the runways.
  • East and north of the surface area, including the Dort Financial Center area and For-Mar Nature Preserve, the Class C starts at 2,100 ft MSL, far above the 400 ft Part 107 limit. There the airspace we fly in is uncontrolled and LAANC is not needed.
  • A 0 ft grid means LAANC cannot approve any flight there. Shoots near Genesee Valley Center need a separate FAA DroneZone request, which takes far longer, so they are planned with extra lead time.
  • FNT's control tower is not staffed overnight, according to FAA airport data. We plan every flight inside the surface area as if the Class C is active and confirm status on the day in a LAANC app.

What Flint businesses film from the air

Most aerial photography requests in Flint fall into a few groups. Downtown’s brick-paved Saginaw Street, the Vehicle City arches and the Flint River running past Riverbank Park give developers and landlords a clear story about walkability and history. Industrial, logistics and manufacturing sites across Genesee County need drone video that shows scale, access and truck flow for recruiting, sales and investor decks. Retail and commercial property near the highway corridors needs clean site and parking views for leasing. Contractors use repeat flights from fixed points to show owners and lenders how a project is moving, and the two campuses, the Cultural Center and the hospitals all generate recruiting and event content.

Bishop International’s Class C covers the core of the city

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Bishop International Airport (FNT) has Class C airspace from the surface to 4,800 feet MSL. Our point checks put downtown, the Flint Farmers’ Market, UM-Flint, Kettering University, the Flint Cultural Center and the Hurley Medical Center area inside that surface area. Every commercial flight there needs FAA authorization, which we request through LAANC.

The FAA’s UAS facility map sets how high that authorization can go. It allows 400 feet over downtown, UM-Flint and the Cultural Center, 200 feet at Kettering and 0 feet at Genesee Valley Center, which sits closer to the runways. A zero grid means LAANC cannot approve the flight at all, so a leasing shoot at a property near the mall needs a separate FAA request well ahead of the date. East and north of the surface area, around the Dort Financial Center and For-Mar Nature Preserve, the Class C does not start until 2,100 feet MSL, so a drone videographer flying under 400 feet there needs no airspace authorization. FAA airport data shows FNT’s tower is not staffed overnight, but we plan inside the surface area as if the Class C is active and confirm on the day.

Campuses, county parks and Back to the Bricks

UM-Flint is University of Michigan property. U-M’s Division of Public Safety and Security says drones may not operate, take off or land on or over university property, and that waivers for the Flint campus come from the Flint chancellor or a designee. Kettering University is a private campus, and we fly there only with its permission. Genesee County Parks are more open than they once were: after a Genesee Circuit Court judge blocked the old parks drone ordinance in February 2020, the county revised its rules to allow drones flown in line with federal and state law. We still call the parks office before any commercial shoot.

Back to the Bricks is the biggest crowd event on the calendar. Its organizers list the 2026 Main Event Week as August 11 to 15, with rolling cruises on Saginaw Street from Flint to Grand Blanc and a car show that takes over downtown on Saturday. Part 107 limits flying over people, so aerials that week are planned around the crowds.

Light, seasons and travel

Flint’s river corridor and parks turn in October, the easiest month for color without summer haze. Industrial sites often look best in low winter sun, when long shadows define rooflines and loading docks. Twilight flights, legal under Part 107 with anti-collision lighting, suit downtown’s lit storefronts and the arches. Our crew drives up from Detroit for each shoot, so we build weather days into the schedule.

Permissions

Where to launch in Flint

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

University of Michigan-Flint

UM-Flint is University of Michigan property, and U-M's Division of Public Safety and Security says drones may not operate, take off or land on or over U-M property without a waiver. For the Flint campus, waivers come from the Flint chancellor or the chancellor's designee. U-M lists civil infractions, misdemeanors, fines and impoundment as penalties.

Kettering University

Kettering is a private university campus. We treat it like any other private property: we launch there or film it up close only with the university's permission, and otherwise keep the flight path off campus.

Genesee County Parks

In February 2020 a Genesee Circuit Court judge blocked enforcement of the county parks' old drone ordinance, and the county then revised its rules to allow drones flown in line with federal and state law, according to reporting at the time. Commercial shoots in county parks still get a call to the parks office first.

Private property and downtown

Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land. We launch only from property where the owner has given written permission, and street or sidewalk closures go through the city.

FAQ

Drone questions in Flint

Can you fly a drone in downtown Flint?
Yes, with FAA authorization. Downtown sits inside Bishop International Airport's Class C surface area, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 400 feet. We request that authorization before every downtown flight and keep the aircraft off UM-Flint property unless the university has approved it.
Can you fly a drone over UM-Flint or Kettering University?
Not without the university's approval. U-M's ordinance bars drones on or over its property, including the Flint campus, unless the Flint chancellor or a designee grants a waiver. Kettering is a private campus, so we fly there only with its permission. For buildings next to either campus, we launch from private land and keep the flight path off university property.
How much does drone photography cost in Flint?
Our published starting prices apply in Flint: aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
Do you have drone pilots in Flint?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at our Detroit studio and travel to Flint for each shoot. Downtown Flint is about 67 miles from the studio, roughly an hour and a quarter by car in normal traffic.
Can you fly during Back to the Bricks?
Not over the crowds. Back to the Bricks runs rolling cruises on Saginaw Street from Flint to Grand Blanc and fills downtown with a car show, and Part 107 limits flying over people. For event coverage we plan launch points and flight paths that stay off the crowd, or schedule aerials before the crowds arrive.
