Drone photography & video in Battle Creek

Battle Creek aerial photography covers the downtown cereal company headquarters and offices, the river corridor, retail along Beckley Road and the Fort Custer Industrial Park on the west side. That west side also holds a military base, a National Guard training center and a 0 foot FAA grid, so our drone pilots check federal boundaries before anything else.

Flying in Battle Creek

Downtown Battle Creek and most of the city are inside Battle Creek Executive Airport's Class D airspace, so commercial flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. Ceilings run 200 to 400 feet downtown and drop to 0 across the west side, where the airport, the Air National Guard base and Fort Custer sit.

  • Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field (BTL), about 3 nautical miles west of downtown, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 ft MSL, with hours set by NOTAM. FAA data places downtown, Kellogg Arena, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and the Beckley Road retail area inside it. LAANC is available.
  • FAA facility map ceilings (map effective Sept. 3, 2026) are 200 ft over the west half of downtown, 400 ft over the east half, Kellogg Arena, the Bronson hospital campus and the Lakeview Square Mall area, and 0 ft over most of the west side, including Leila Arboretum, the Fort Custer Industrial Park and the airport.
  • FAA national security flight restrictions ban all drone flights from the surface to 400 ft AGL, 24 hours a day, over two installations of the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base at the airport, a Marine Forces Reserve training center just north of it and the Fort Custer Training Center west of the city. LAANC cannot authorize flights there.
  • The Class D ends south of I-94. At Binder Park Zoo, FAA data shows no controlled airspace at the surface (Class E begins at 700 ft above ground), though the zoo bans drones on its grounds.
  • The Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival is held at the airport in early July; the 2026 air shows ran July 2 to 5. We check for event flight restrictions and NOTAMs before any shoot that week.

What Battle Creek businesses film from the air

Battle Creek’s downtown is still defined by cereal. Bridge Michigan reported in December 2025 that WK Kellogg Co’s headquarters remains at One Kellogg Square downtown after Ferrero’s purchase of the company, and that Ferrero plans to make Battle Creek the headquarters of its North American cereal operations. Around that campus, office owners, developers and venues such as Kellogg Arena use aerial photography to show a compact downtown where the Battle Creek River meets the Kalamazoo River. South of the city, the retail area along Beckley Road and around Lakeview Square Mall needs clean site and access shots for leasing. On the west side, Battle Creek Unlimited says more than 80 companies and 13,000 employees are based in the Fort Custer Industrial Park, including 25 international firms, 18 of them from Japan. Plants and warehouses there use drone video for recruiting, sale packages and progress documentation, but the airspace makes it the hardest part of town to fly.

A downtown that is open and a west side that is not

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field (BTL) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 feet MSL, with hours set by NOTAM. Our checks put downtown, Kellogg Arena, the Bronson hospital campus and the Beckley Road retail area inside it, so commercial flights need FAA authorization, which we request through LAANC.

Downtown is workable. The facility map allows 200 feet over the west half of downtown and 400 feet over the east half, Kellogg Arena and the hospital campus. The picture changes west of downtown. From Leila Arboretum out past the airport, including the Fort Custer Industrial Park, the grid is 0 feet, so no LAANC approval is possible and every flight needs a separate FAA request with long lead time. South of I-94 the Class D ends.

Federal no-drone zones

On top of the 0 foot grid, the FAA’s national security UAS flight restrictions list four sites on the west side: two installations of the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base at the airport, a Marine Forces Reserve training center just north of the field and the Fort Custer Training Center, which stretches from inside the Battle Creek Class D west into Kalamazoo County. These restrictions run from the surface to 400 feet above ground, 24 hours a day, and apply to every kind of drone flight. The base is home to Michigan’s 110th Wing, which runs an MQ-9 ground control station there, according to the wing’s DVIDS page. For clients on the west side, we map their parcel against these boundaries before we talk about shot lists.

Light and seasons

Summer brings the biggest aerial event in town, the Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival at the airport in early July. The airport is off limits to our drones regardless, and we check that week’s NOTAMs before flying anywhere nearby. Fall color along the river corridor and in the neighborhoods east of downtown is the best time for wide city views. For facades and plants, the hour after sunrise or before sunset gives the most even light, and Part 107 allows twilight and night flights with anti-collision lighting.

Planning a Battle Creek shoot from Detroit

We are based in Detroit and travel to Battle Creek for each project, about 118 miles from our studio. Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. Our drone videographers check the BTL facility map grid, federal restriction boundaries and landowner permission before we quote. See our Detroit drone photography services, including industrial drone video and commercial real estate drone photography, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Battle Creek

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Air National Guard base and Fort Custer

FAA data lists national security UAS flight restrictions over the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base at the airport, home of Michigan's 110th Wing, over the Marine Forces Reserve training center just north of it, and over the Fort Custer Training Center, which runs from inside the Battle Creek Class D west into Kalamazoo County. LAANC cannot authorize flights inside them, so we plan flight paths around them.

Binder Park Zoo

Binder Park Zoo's guest code of conduct says drones are not permitted on zoo grounds. The zoo sits outside the Class D south of the city, but that does not change the landowner's rule.

Fort Custer Recreation Area

The state recreation area near Augusta falls under DNR Land Use Order 5.1(6), which requires the department's written permission for any commercial drone flight and bars flights over campgrounds and occupied beaches.

Offices, plants and retail

We launch from private property only with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Battle Creek

Can you fly a drone in downtown Battle Creek?
