Drone photography & video in Jackson

Jackson aerial photography covers the downtown office core anchored by the Consumers Energy headquarters, the Cascades and the county's parks, retail along the north side and a long industrial base. Almost all of it sits under low FAA ceilings from Jackson County Airport, so our drone videographers plan every Jackson shot list around 50 and 100 foot limits.

Flying in Jackson

Most of Jackson, including downtown, the Cascades, Ella Sharp Park and Jackson Crossing, is inside Jackson County Airport's controlled airspace, so commercial flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. Ceilings are low across the city: 50 to 200 feet in most places and 0 near the airport and the hospital.

  • Jackson County Airport-Reynolds Field (JXN), about 2.6 nautical miles west-northwest of downtown, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 ft MSL. FAA data also maps a surface Class E area in the same footprint and lists the hours for both as set by NOTAM. LAANC is available, and we file it for every flight inside the boundary.
  • FAA facility map ceilings (map effective Sept. 3, 2026) are 100 ft over the west half of downtown, 200 ft on the east end, 50 ft at the Cascades, Ella Sharp Park and Jackson Crossing, and 0 ft over Henry Ford Jackson Hospital and the west side near the airport.
  • The controlled airspace ends at the city's east edge. East of downtown toward Michigan Center, FAA data shows no controlled airspace at the surface (Class E begins at 700 ft above ground), and no LAANC is needed below 400 ft.
  • Anything above a grid's ceiling needs a separate FAA DroneZone request, which takes far longer than LAANC. A 50 ft grid rules out most high overviews, so we plan those shoots around lower, closer angles or book extra lead time.
  • Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn is on the FAA's stadium list. During NASCAR Cup Series races, the FAA bars drones within 3 nautical miles of the track from one hour before to one hour after the event. By our measurements the track is about 13 nautical miles from downtown Jackson, so the restriction affects the area around Brooklyn, not the city.

What Jackson businesses film from the air

Downtown Jackson is built around one employer’s headquarters. Consumers Energy has been headquartered in Jackson since the utility’s founding in 1886, according to the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, and its 13 story tower on the east end of downtown, built with a restored 1932 post office attached, anchors most aerial frames of downtown. Around it, office owners, developers and restaurants use aerial photography to show how their buildings sit in a compact, walkable grid. On the north side, the retail area around Jackson Crossing needs site, parking and access shots for leasing. Jackson’s manufacturing and industrial parks use drone video for recruiting, sale packages and progress documentation.

The best known subject is the Cascades. Jackson County describes the man-made falls as 500 feet long and 64 feet high, with 16 falls, 11 of them illuminated, and six fountains. It makes a strong frame for event, tourism and brand work, as long as the flight plan respects the ceiling.

Low ceilings across the city

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Jackson County Airport-Reynolds Field (JXN) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,500 feet MSL, with a surface Class E area in the same footprint and hours set by NOTAM. Our checks put downtown, the Cascades, Ella Sharp Park, Jackson Crossing and Henry Ford Jackson Hospital inside it, so commercial flights need FAA authorization, which we request through LAANC.

Jackson’s facility map is low. The west half of downtown allows 100 feet and the east end 200 feet. The Cascades, Ella Sharp Park and Jackson Crossing are all 50 foot grids, and the hospital and the west side near the airport are 0. A client who wants a sweeping 400 foot overview of a plant on the west side needs a separate FAA request well ahead of the date, so we usually recommend lower, closer angles that fit the grid. Past the city’s east edge the controlled airspace ends.

Racing, state land and the lakes

Michigan International Speedway, near Brooklyn southeast of Jackson, is on the FAA’s stadium list, and the FAA bars drones within 3 nautical miles during NASCAR Cup Series races from one hour before to one hour after. The track also bans drones on its property at all times. The city itself is well outside that circle, but homes and lake property near Brooklyn can fall inside it on race weekend. Northeast of the city, Waterloo Recreation Area needs written DNR permission for any commercial flight. Our stadium TFR guide explains how event restrictions work.

Light and seasons

The illuminated Cascades read best at dusk, and Part 107 allows twilight and night flights with anti-collision lighting. Fall color in Ella Sharp Park and along the Grand River gives the city its best aerial season. For downtown facades and industrial sites, the hour after sunrise or before sunset gives the most even light and the longest shadows for texture.

Planning a Jackson shoot from Detroit

We are based in Detroit and travel to Jackson for each project, about 78 miles from our studio. Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. Our drone photographers check the JXN facility map grid for that site, event restrictions and landowner permission before we quote. See our Detroit drone photography services, including industrial drone video and commercial real estate drone photography, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Jackson

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

The Cascades and county parks

The Cascades, in Sparks Foundation County Park, is run by Jackson County and sits in a 50 ft facility map grid. We contact the county parks office before launching there and keep flights under that ceiling.

Waterloo Recreation Area

The DNR calls Waterloo the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula. DNR Land Use Order 5.1(6) requires written permission from the department before any commercial drone flight in a state park or recreation area, and bars flights over campgrounds, equestrian facilities and occupied beaches and within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites.

Michigan International Speedway

MIS says it strictly prohibits the use of drones for any purpose on track property, and track staff may remove operators and hold the aircraft until the event ends. We do not launch on or fly over speedway property.

Offices, plants and retail

We launch from private property only with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Jackson

Can you fly a drone in downtown Jackson?
Yes, with FAA authorization. Downtown sits inside Jackson County Airport's controlled airspace, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals of 100 feet over the west half of downtown and 200 feet on the east end. Higher shots need a separate FAA request with more lead time.
Can you film the Cascades in Jackson with a drone?
It takes planning. The Cascades sits in a 50 foot FAA facility map grid inside Jackson County Airport's airspace, and the park is run by Jackson County, so we arrange permission with the county and design the flight around low angles.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Jackson, MI?
RAW Digital Group sends FAA Part 107 certified drone pilots and drone videographers to Jackson from our Detroit studio for aerial photography and drone video. We handle LAANC authorization and landowner permission as part of the project.
Do you have drone pilots in Jackson?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at our Detroit studio and travel to Jackson for each shoot. Downtown Jackson is about 78 miles from our studio, roughly an hour and a half by car without traffic.
How much does drone photography cost in Jackson?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
