Drone photography & video in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo aerial photography covers the downtown Kalamazoo Mall and Bronson Park, the Bronson hospital district, the college and university campuses just west of downtown, and retail and business property south into Portage. Nearly all of it sits inside Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International's Class D airspace, and two campuses with strict drone rules sit just west of downtown, so our drone videographers plan property lines as carefully as altitude.

Flying in Kalamazoo

Downtown Kalamazoo, Western Michigan University's main campus, Kalamazoo College, the east side and Portage's Crossroads Mall area are inside Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport's Class D, so commercial flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. Ceilings drop sharply near Bronson Methodist Hospital and the airport.

  • Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), about 4 miles southeast of downtown, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,400 ft MSL. FAA data places downtown, the Kalamazoo Mall, Bronson Park, WMU's main campus, Waldo Stadium, Kalamazoo College, Milham Park, Wings Event Center and Crossroads Mall in Portage inside it. LAANC is available.
  • FAA facility map ceilings (map effective Sept. 3, 2026) are 400 ft over downtown, Bronson Park, WMU's main campus and Kalamazoo College, 300 ft at Crossroads Mall and central Portage, 150 ft at Milham Park, 100 ft at Wings Event Center and 50 ft over Bronson Methodist Hospital.
  • The Class D ends west and north of the city. Around WMU's Parkview Avenue area and Asylum Lake Preserve, FAA data shows no controlled airspace at the surface (Class E begins at 700 ft above ground), and toward Parchment and Oshtemo Township there is no facility map grid at all. No LAANC is needed below 400 ft there.
  • FAA data lists AZO's Class D hours as set by NOTAM, so it is not active around the clock. We file LAANC for every flight inside its boundary anyway and confirm the day's status before launch.
  • Waldo Stadium seats 30,200, according to WMU Athletics, which puts it over the 30,000 seat threshold for the FAA stadium flight restriction. On WMU home football game days, drones are barred within 3 nautical miles of the stadium from one hour before kickoff to one hour after the game. By our measurements downtown is about 0.7 nautical miles from Waldo, so the whole central city is closed.

What Kalamazoo businesses film from the air

Kalamazoo aerial photography starts downtown. The Kalamazoo Mall on Burdick Street opened in 1959 as the nation’s first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall, WWMT reports, and it still frames the city’s retail, restaurant and apartment marketing, with Bronson Park a block away. The Bronson hospital district sits just southeast of the Mall, and to the west Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University shape a large rental and student housing market where a drone video can show how close a building sits to campus. Southwest of the airport, Portage’s Crossroads Mall area and business corridors need clean site, parking and access shots for leasing and sale packages. Contractors across the county use repeat flights from fixed points to document progress for owners and lenders.

A Class D city with tight spots

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,400 feet MSL. Our checks put downtown, both campuses, Waldo Stadium, the east side, Milham Park, Wings Event Center and Crossroads Mall inside it. Every commercial flight there needs FAA authorization, which we request through LAANC.

The facility map is generous over the center of town, with 400 feet available over downtown, Bronson Park, WMU and Kalamazoo College. It tightens fast toward the airport and the hospital: 300 feet at Crossroads Mall, 150 feet at Milham Park, 100 feet at Wings Event Center and 50 feet over Bronson Methodist Hospital. A high overview of a building next to Bronson does not fit a 50 foot grid, so we design lower angles or file a separate FAA request well ahead. West and north of the city the Class D ends, and around Asylum Lake, Parchment and Oshtemo Township the surface airspace is uncontrolled.

Campuses and game days

Kalamazoo’s biggest limits come from its two campuses. WMU’s drone policy requires an approved operating plan from its Unoccupied Aircraft System Board for any flight from, on or over university land, plus a written agreement and insurance for outside contractors. Kalamazoo College’s policy says outside entities may not fly drones on its campus at all. For properties next to either school, we launch from private land with the owner’s permission and keep the flight path off campus.

Waldo Stadium seats 30,200, according to WMU Athletics, just over the FAA’s 30,000 seat threshold. From one hour before kickoff to one hour after every Broncos home football game, the stadium flight restriction closes the airspace within 3 nautical miles. By our measurements Kalamazoo College is about 0.3 nautical miles from the stadium, downtown about 0.7 and Bronson Methodist Hospital under 1, so home game days rule out the central city. Our stadium TFR guide explains how the rule works.

Light and seasons

October color along the Kalamazoo River and in the neighborhoods around campus overlaps with football season, so we book weekdays and away weekends. Summer is the easiest time for full, green downtown and park views, and Fort Custer’s lakes and trails east of town are an option for outdoor brands once the DNR grants written permission. For facades, the hour after sunrise or before sunset gives the most even light, and Part 107 allows twilight and night flights with anti-collision lighting when a building looks best lit up.

Planning a Kalamazoo shoot from Detroit

We are based in Detroit and travel to Kalamazoo for each project, about 140 miles from our studio. Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. We check the AZO facility map grid for that block, WMU and Kalamazoo College property lines, the Broncos home schedule and landowner permission before we quote. See our Detroit drone photography services, including campus drone video and commercial real estate drone photography, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Kalamazoo

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Western Michigan University

WMU's drone policy, effective Aug. 1, 2022, covers anyone flying from, on or over land governed by WMU. Operators must submit an operating plan to the university's Unoccupied Aircraft System Board and have it approved before flying, and outside contractors must sign a written agreement holding WMU harmless and carry insurance set by WMU risk management. The policy also restates the Waldo Stadium game-day restriction.

Kalamazoo College

Kalamazoo College's drone policy says outside entities may not operate drones on its campus. The only exceptions it lists are official institutional use and research or teaching use approved through the Vice President for Student Development, plus local first responders. We keep launches and flight paths off the college's property.

Fort Custer and other state land

Fort Custer Recreation Area, east of Kalamazoo near Augusta, is managed by the Michigan DNR. DNR Land Use Order 5.1(6) prohibits commercial drone flights in state parks and recreation areas without written DNR permission, and bans flights over campgrounds and occupied beaches and within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites.

Offices, hospitals and retail

We launch from private property only with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Kalamazoo

Can you fly a drone in downtown Kalamazoo?
Yes, with FAA authorization. Downtown sits inside Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport's Class D airspace, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 400 feet over the Kalamazoo Mall and Bronson Park. The ceiling drops to 50 feet at Bronson Methodist Hospital, and downtown is closed during WMU home football games.
Can you fly a drone over Western Michigan University?
Only with WMU approval. WMU's policy requires anyone flying from, on or over university land to have an operating plan approved by its Unoccupied Aircraft System Board, and outside contractors need a written agreement and insurance. For properties near campus we launch from private land and keep the flight path off WMU property.
Are drones allowed near Waldo Stadium on game days?
No. Waldo Stadium seats 30,200, so the FAA stadium flight restriction applies: no drones within 3 nautical miles from one hour before kickoff until one hour after a WMU home football game. That circle covers downtown Kalamazoo, both campuses and the Bronson hospital district.
How much does drone photography cost in Kalamazoo?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
Do you have drone pilots in Kalamazoo?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at our Detroit studio and travel to Kalamazoo and Portage for each aerial photography or drone video shoot. Downtown Kalamazoo is about 140 miles from our studio, roughly two and a half hours by car without traffic.
