Drone photography & video in Shelby Township

Aerial photography in Shelby Township covers commercial property on Hall Road and Van Dyke, a steady run of new subdivisions and some of the biggest green space in Macomb County along the Clinton River and Stony Creek. FAA data shows the whole township as uncontrolled Class G airspace, so our drone video planning here is less about LAANC and more about park rules and who owns the launch site.

Airspace

Flying in Shelby Township

FAA data shows all of Shelby Township as Class G airspace at the surface, with no Class D and no UAS facility map grids, so Part 107 flights below 400 feet need no FAA authorization. Selfridge's controlled airspace and its national security restriction stop well short of the township.

  • We sampled the FAA's Class Airspace layer across the township. Every point returned Class G at the surface, with Class E starting 700 ft above ground. No LAANC is needed below 400 ft.
  • Detroit Metro's (DTW) Class B shelf sits over the township's southwest corner with a floor of 6,000 ft MSL, far above any drone flight.
  • Selfridge Air National Guard Base (MTC) is about 11 miles southeast of the township offices on Van Dyke. Its Class D does not reach Shelby Township, and the FAA national security flight restriction over the base, surface to 400 ft, is about 6 miles from the township's southeast corner.
  • Ray Community Airport (57D), a small public-use field, is about 4.5 miles northeast of the township's northeast corner. FAA airport data also lists private-use helipads in the Utica area, so we keep a lookout for low helicopter traffic.
  • Class G does not mean anything goes. Part 107 still limits altitude, flights over people and night operations, and temporary flight restrictions can appear on short notice, so we check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight.

What Shelby Township businesses film from the air

Shelby Township is one of the larger communities in Macomb County, with 79,408 residents at the 2020 census and about 35 square miles, and much of the aerial work here follows its growth. Builders and sales teams use drone photography to show new subdivisions in context: the street layout, the ponds, the drive to Hall Road or M-53. Commercial landlords on Hall Road (M-59) and Van Dyke (M-53) need clean site and access views for leasing packages, and industrial owners along Van Dyke use aerial video to show dock doors, yard space and highway access in one pass.

Open airspace, with neighbors to watch

We checked the FAA’s Class Airspace data at dozens of points across the township, and every one returned uncontrolled Class G at the surface. There are no UAS facility map grids here, which means no LAANC filing and no altitude ceiling below the Part 107 limit of 400 feet. Detroit Metro’s Class B floor over the southwest corner is 6,000 feet MSL, far above anything a drone does.

The nearest restrictions sit outside the township. Selfridge Air National Guard Base is about 11 miles southeast of the township offices, and the FAA’s national security flight restriction over the base, from the surface to 400 feet, ends about 6 miles from Shelby’s southeast corner. Ray Community Airport lies a few miles past the northeast corner. We still check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight, because temporary restrictions can appear with little notice. Our Detroit drone rules guide explains how these layers fit together.

Parks, trails and a historic proving ground

The township’s biggest aerial subjects are green. Stony Creek Metropark covers 4,435 acres around the 500-acre Stony Creek Lake, with a 6.2-mile paved loop and a golf course, according to the Metroparks. Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, but not over beach or pool bathhouses and never in a way that disturbs bald eagles or other protected wildlife, and the Metroparks direct commercial filming to the park office.

River Bends Park, run by the township, covers more than 850 acres, and the Clinton River runs about six miles through it, according to Shelby Township Parks and Recreation. The Macomb Orchard Trail starts at 24 Mile and Dequindre in the township and runs 24 miles to Richmond, according to Macomb County, which makes it a natural line for a follow shot. On Van Dyke, the Packard Proving Grounds, opened by Packard in the late 1920s with buildings by Albert Kahn, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Packard Motor Car Foundation cares for the site, so any shoot there starts with the foundation’s permission.

Light and seasons

Late spring through early fall gives green lawns and full foliage for subdivision and listing work. October is the standout month for the wooded valleys at Stony Creek and River Bends, where the Clinton River corridor turns color and a low sun shows the terrain. Winter works for construction and industrial flights, since bare trees show more of a site, though cold shortens battery life. For building exteriors, the first hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give the most even light.

Permissions

Where to launch in Shelby Township

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Stony Creek Metropark

Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, but not over bathhouses at beaches or pools and never in a way that harasses bald eagles or other protected species. It also requires prior notice to an airport operator when flying within 5 miles of an airport. Rule 7 restricts commercial activity on park land, and the Metroparks direct commercial filming requests to the park office.

Township parks and trails

River Bends Park, the township's section of the Macomb Orchard Trail and other township parks are public land with posted hours and rentals. We contact Shelby Township Parks and Recreation before planning a commercial launch there.

Packard Proving Grounds

The historic site on Van Dyke is cared for by the Packard Motor Car Foundation. Any shoot on the grounds starts with the foundation's permission.

Subdivisions, retail and industrial sites

We launch from private property only with the owner's written permission. Michigan's PA 436 of 2016 bars townships from passing their own drone flight ordinances, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's land. This is general information, not legal advice.

FAQ

Drone questions in Shelby Township

Do I need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Shelby Township?
Not for the airspace itself. FAA data shows the whole township as Class G at the surface, so Part 107 flights below 400 feet need no LAANC approval. Park rules, property permission and any temporary flight restriction still apply, and we check them before every shoot.
Can you fly a drone at Stony Creek Metropark?
Yes, within the rules. Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, with no flights over beach or pool bathhouses and no disturbance of bald eagles or other protected wildlife. Commercial filming is arranged through the Stony Creek park office before the shoot.
How far is Shelby Township from Selfridge Air National Guard Base?
The township offices on Van Dyke are about 11 miles from the Selfridge airfield, and the base's national security flight restriction is about 6 miles from the township's southeast corner. Selfridge's Class D does not cover any part of Shelby Township.
How fast can you get a drone to Shelby Township?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at our studio at 2200 Hunt St in Detroit, about 31 miles by road from the township offices on Van Dyke, or roughly 45 minutes without heavy traffic. Scheduling depends on weather and the calendar, so send your date window and we will confirm.
How much does drone photography cost in Shelby Township?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. The final quote depends on the site, the deliverables and how many locations the shoot covers.
