Drone photography & video in Clinton Township

Clinton Township work runs from the Hall Road retail and college corridor to neighborhoods along the Clinton River. About half the township sits under Selfridge Air National Guard Base's Class D airspace, so the allowed altitude changes from one side of town to the other.

Airspace

Flying in Clinton Township

The east side of Clinton Township, toward Mount Clemens and Selfridge, is inside Selfridge's Class D and needs LAANC, with ceilings from 400 feet down to 0 feet. The west side, including the Mall at Partridge Creek and Macomb Community College's Center Campus, is Class G at the surface.

  • Selfridge ANGB (MTC) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 ft MSL. FAA data puts about half of the township inside it. The township Civic Center is just inside the western edge; the Mall at Partridge Creek, Macomb Community College's Center Campus and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital are just outside.
  • LAANC is available for MTC. FAA facility map ceilings step down toward the base: 400 ft along the western edge of the Class D, 200 to 300 ft through the middle of the township, and 100 ft to 0 ft along the eastern edge near Mount Clemens and the Harrison Township line.
  • A 0 ft grid means LAANC cannot automatically approve any altitude there. Those spots need a request the FAA reviews individually, which takes far longer, so we plan them well ahead or shoot from a nearby grid.
  • FAA data lists the Selfridge Class D as part-time, with hours set by NOTAM rather than continuous. We treat it as active and file LAANC for every flight inside it.
  • Selfridge ANGB itself, in Harrison Township, is covered by an FAA national security UAS flight restriction from the surface to 400 ft AGL, around the clock. Its boundary is about a quarter mile from Clinton Township's eastern edge.
  • West of the Class D, Class E starts 700 ft above ground and Detroit Metro's Class B shelf starts at 6,000 ft MSL.

Airspace and temporary restrictions change. We check B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day of every flight. Read our Detroit drone rules guide.

What Clinton Township businesses film from the air

Clinton Township’s commercial core runs along Hall Road, where the Mall at Partridge Creek, Macomb Community College’s Center Campus, the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, restaurants and medical offices sit within a few miles of one another. Aerials there show leasing prospects how a site connects to M-59, where the parking is and what sits next door. Farther south and east, Gratiot Avenue and Groesbeck Highway carry commercial and light industrial property, and the Clinton River’s branches wind through residential neighborhoods where a riverfront lot sells on the view.

Selfridge airspace shapes most shoots

We checked the FAA’s Class Airspace, UAS facility map and national security layers across the township. Selfridge Air National Guard Base (MTC), in neighboring Harrison Township, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 feet MSL, and about half of Clinton Township falls inside it. Its western edge runs diagonally, from the township’s northern border near the Civic Center, which is just inside, to its southeast corner. The Mall at Partridge Creek, the Center Campus and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital are just outside, in Class G.

Inside the Class D, we request authorization through LAANC, and the ceiling depends on the grid. The FAA facility map allows 400 feet along the western edge, 200 to 300 feet through the middle of the township and 100 feet or 0 feet along the eastern edge near Mount Clemens. A 0-foot grid means no automatic approval at any altitude, so a project there needs a separate FAA request with real lead time. FAA data also lists Selfridge’s Class D as part-time, with hours set by NOTAM, and we file LAANC for every flight inside it regardless.

The base itself is covered by an FAA national security UAS flight restriction from the surface to 400 feet, 24 hours a day, and its boundary is about a quarter mile from the township’s eastern edge. Our Detroit drone rules guide covers how these layers fit together. Airspace changes, so we confirm every flight in B4UFLY or a LAANC app on the day.

The lake next door

Lake St. Clair Metropark, just east of the township, is the closest big waterfront location. It has a beach, a marina, an Olympic-sized pool and a 3.75-mile paved trail, according to the Metroparks. It also sits inside Selfridge’s Class D with a 100-foot ceiling, about 3 miles from the base. Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones but bars flights over bathhouses and pools and requires prior notice to the airport operator and tower within 5 miles of an airport. Commercial filming needs a permit through the park office.

Wind is the other lake factor. NOAA’s Coast Pilot says peak gusts at Selfridge have reached the 60-knot range in spring and late fall, with northerly and northwesterly winds common there in the morning and southeasterlies common on spring and summer afternoons. Calm mornings are usually the best window for waterfront work.

Light and seasons

Late spring through early fall gives green lawns and busy retail lots. Along the Clinton River, October color adds interest to residential listings. Low winter sun can work for commercial rooftops on clear days, though cold shortens flight time.

Permissions

Where to launch in Clinton Township

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

The park, just east of the township in Harrison Township, sits inside Selfridge's Class D with a 100 ft facility map ceiling, about 3 miles from the base. Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones under federal and state law, but not over bathhouses at beaches or pools, and requires prior notice to the airport operator and control tower when flying within 5 miles of an airport. Selfridge is on the Metroparks' airport list. Commercial filming needs a permit through the park office.

Near the base

No flights over Selfridge ANGB at any altitude up to 400 feet. On the township's east side, we pick launch points and flight paths that keep the aircraft west of the base boundary and inside the grid ceilings LAANC approved.

Campuses, malls and hospitals

Macomb Community College, the Mall at Partridge Creek and hospital campuses are private or institutional property. We launch with written permission, plan around parking-lot traffic and people who are not part of the shoot, and watch for medical helicopters, which always have the right of way.

Township rules

Michigan's PA 436 of 2016 bars townships from passing their own ordinances on drone flight. Property owners, including the township for its parks and facilities, still decide who can launch or film on their land. This is general information, not legal advice.

FAQ

Drone questions in Clinton Township

Do I need LAANC to fly a drone in Clinton Township?
On the east side, yes. FAA data puts about half the township, generally the east side from the Civic Center area to the southeast corner, inside Selfridge ANGB's Class D, where flights need LAANC or other FAA authorization. The west side, including Partridge Creek and Macomb Community College's Center Campus, is Class G, so no authorization is needed below 400 feet.
How close to Selfridge Air National Guard Base can a drone fly?
Not over the base. An FAA national security restriction covers Selfridge from the surface to 400 feet around the clock. Near it, the facility map grids along the township's eastern edge drop to 100 feet and 0 feet, which means little or no automatic LAANC approval close to the base.
Can you fly a drone at Lake St. Clair Metropark?
Yes, within the rules. Metroparks Rule 28 allows drones consistent with federal and state law, with no flights over bathhouses or pools and prior notice to Selfridge because the park is within 5 miles of the base. The park is inside Selfridge's Class D with a 100-foot LAANC ceiling, and commercial filming needs a permit from the park office.
Why does the allowed altitude change across Clinton Township?
The FAA's facility map divides Selfridge's Class D into grids with their own LAANC ceilings. They run from 400 feet on the western edge of the Class D to 200 and 300 feet in the middle and 100 or 0 feet near Mount Clemens, so two addresses a few miles apart can have very different limits.
How does wind off Lake St. Clair affect a shoot?
It can end one early. NOAA's Coast Pilot reports peak gusts at Selfridge in the 60-knot range in spring and late fall. We check forecasts and on-site gusts before flying and reschedule rather than push a small aircraft in strong wind.
