Drone photography & video in Holland

Holland aerial photography is about water: Lake Macatawa, the channel out to Lake Michigan, the Big Red lighthouse and a downtown that stays clear of snow all winter. The airspace is open, so our drone videographers plan Holland shoots around Holland State Park rules, Hope College's approval process and Tulip Time crowds.

Airspace

Flying in Holland

Holland is Class G airspace at the surface on current FAA data, from downtown and Hope College out to Lake Macatawa and Holland State Park, so a Part 107 flight below 400 feet needs no LAANC authorization. The planning point is traffic at West Michigan Regional Airport south of town.

  • FAA Class Airspace data shows no controlled airspace at the surface over downtown Holland, Hope College, Windmill Island, Lake Macatawa or Holland State Park. Class E starts at 700 feet, well above the 400 foot limit for drones.
  • FAA data returns no UAS facility map grids over Holland, because there is no controlled surface airspace to authorize. That also means LAANC is not needed for flights here below 400 feet.
  • West Michigan Regional Airport (BIV), once known as Tulip City Airport, is about 3 miles south of downtown. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace around it either, so we plan flights on the south side to stay clear of arriving and departing aircraft, which have the right of way under Part 107.
  • Airspace and restrictions change, including temporary flight restrictions for events. We check B4UFLY and NOTAMs on the day of every flight.

What Holland businesses film from the air

Most aerial photography in Holland starts at the water. Homes and condos on Lake Macatawa and near Lake Michigan sell on frontage, dock access and the view down the channel, and only drone photography shows all three in one frame. Marinas, resorts and restaurants along the lake use drone video for booking and season-opening campaigns. Downtown Eighth Street retailers and the property owners around them want overviews that show the district’s density and its connection to the water. Holland’s manufacturers and new housing projects need site and progress coverage that ground cameras cannot give.

The signature subject is the Big Red lighthouse at the mouth of the channel. The Michigan DNR notes that it sits outside Holland State Park, across the channel from the park’s Lake Michigan unit, which matters for where a drone can launch.

Open airspace, busy shoreline

According to FAA Class Airspace data, Holland has no controlled airspace at the surface. Downtown, Hope College, Windmill Island, Lake Macatawa and Holland State Park are all Class G up to Class E at 700 feet. The FAA’s UAS facility map has no grids here, so a Part 107 flight below 400 feet needs no LAANC request.

The nearest airport is West Michigan Regional Airport (BIV), about 3 miles south of downtown. The airport describes itself as once the Tulip City Airport. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace around it, so no LAANC is needed, but we watch for aircraft on south side shoots and give way to them.

State park, college and county rules

Holland State Park is Michigan DNR land. The DNR’s rules require written permission before any commercial drone flight and bar drones over occupied beaches, campgrounds and restrooms, and within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites. Summer weekends at the beach leave little room to fly, so we plan early mornings or the shoulder seasons.

Hope College sits next to downtown and requires every drone flight on its property to be approved in advance. Commercial operators apply to Campus Safety at least 10 days ahead with proof of insurance. Ottawa County’s park drone permit rule was struck down as preempted by state law in a 2022 case, according to the Michigan Court of Appeals, but commercial use of county land is still worth clearing with the parks office.

Seasons, Tulip Time and winter

Tulip Time sets Holland’s spring calendar. The festival says more than six million tulips bloom across the city and area attractions during its ten days, and its 2027 dates are April 30 to May 9. Those beds make strong aerials, but crowds fill downtown and Windmill Island, and Part 107 limits flights over people, so early mornings are the realistic window.

Winter brings a different look. The City of Holland says its downtown snowmelt system, running since 1988 and heating about 690,000 square feet of streets and sidewalks, is the largest publicly owned system in North America. After a snowfall, Eighth Street stays clear while the lake and rooftops go white. Summer sunsets over Lake Michigan and the channel are the most requested light, and wind off the lake is the main weather check we make before driving over.

Planning a Holland shoot

We are based at our Detroit studio on Hunt Street, about 180 miles away, and quote travel with each project. Pairing a Holland shoot with others in West Michigan, such as Grand Rapids, shares the trip. See our Detroit drone photography services, including waterfront drone photography and hotel and resort aerials, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Holland

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Holland State Park (Michigan DNR)

The DNR's state park rules say drones may not be flown for a commercial purpose without written permission from the department, and not over an occupied beach, a campground, a restroom or changing court, or within 100 yards of a cultural or historical site. The park has two campgrounds and a busy Lake Michigan beach, so we get DNR permission first and fly outside peak beach hours.

Hope College

Hope College requires pre-approval for all drone activity on its property. Commercial operators apply to Campus Safety at least 10 days before the flight, with the aircraft's serial number, flight boundaries, proof of FAA compliance and a certificate of insurance. Drone use at Hope athletic events is limited to approved commercial use.

Ottawa County parks

In 2022 the Michigan Court of Appeals, in an unpublished opinion, upheld a ruling that Ottawa County's park rule requiring written permission to fly drones was preempted by Michigan's drone law. The county can still manage commercial activity on its land, so we contact the parks office before any paid shoot there.

Lakefront homes and businesses

We launch only from private property with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not let a pilot use someone else's land, dock or beach as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Holland

Can you fly a drone over Holland State Park?
Not for commercial work without written permission from the Michigan DNR. The DNR's rules also bar drones over occupied beaches and campgrounds and within 100 yards of cultural or historical sites in state parks. For waterfront listings near the park, we usually launch from private land with the owner's permission.
Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Holland, Michigan?
Not below 400 feet in most of the city. FAA data shows Holland is Class G airspace at the surface, with Class E starting at 700 feet, so LAANC is not needed. We still yield to traffic at West Michigan Regional Airport south of town and check for temporary restrictions on the day.
Can you film Tulip Time with a drone?
Only where the flight path avoids the crowds. Tulip Time 2027 runs April 30 to May 9, according to the festival, and Part 107 limits flying over people. Tulip beds on private property or early morning flights before crowds arrive are the practical options.
Do you have drone pilots in Holland?
Our FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at our Detroit studio and travel to Holland, which is about 180 miles and a little over three hours by car. We do not have a Holland office, so we plan each trip around weather and wind off Lake Michigan.
How much does drone photography cost in Holland?
Our published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
