Drone photography & video in Muskegon

Muskegon aerial photography covers two very different pieces of sky: downtown and the south side sit inside Muskegon County Airport's controlled airspace, while Muskegon Lake, the channel and the Lake Michigan beaches are outside it. Our drone pilots plan each Muskegon shoot around that line, the DNR's rules at Muskegon State Park and the wind off the big lake.

Flying in Muskegon

Downtown Muskegon, Muskegon Heights and Norton Shores are inside Muskegon County Airport's Class D airspace, so commercial drone flights there need FAA authorization through LAANC. Muskegon Lake, Pere Marquette Park, the channel and Muskegon State Park are uncontrolled Class G at the surface.

  • Muskegon County Airport (MKG), about 4 miles south of downtown, has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 ft MSL. FAA Class Airspace data places downtown along the Muskegon Lake shoreline, Hackley Park, Muskegon Heights and parts of Norton Shores inside it.
  • LAANC is available at MKG. The FAA facility map allows 400 ft over downtown and Hackley Park, 200 ft over Muskegon Heights, 100 ft in parts of Norton Shores and 0 ft over the airport and the Lakes Mall area in Fruitport Township.
  • The Class D's northern edge runs close to the downtown shoreline. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace over the middle of Muskegon Lake, North Muskegon, Pere Marquette Park or Muskegon State Park, where Class E starts at 700 ft.
  • MKG's tower is part-time. FAA data also lists a Class E surface area over the same zone, so the airspace stays controlled when the tower is closed, and we file LAANC for every flight inside it.
  • Airspace and temporary flight restrictions change. We check B4UFLY or a LAANC app and current NOTAMs on the day of every flight.

What Muskegon businesses film from the air

Muskegon Lake is the center of most aerial photography here. Homes, condos and marinas on its shore sell on frontage and the view west to the channel, and only drone video shows both with the distance to Lake Michigan in one frame. Downtown property owners want overviews that tie their buildings to the lakefront. Industrial and port sites along the lake need clean site coverage for owners, lenders and recruiting. On the Lake Michigan side, Pere Marquette Park’s beach, the pier lights and the Lake Express ferry terminal on Lakeshore Drive, which runs crossings to Milwaukee, give hospitality and tourism clients an establishing shot that reads as Muskegon right away.

Class D downtown, open air at the lakeshore

According to FAA Class Airspace data, Muskegon County Airport (MKG) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 feet MSL, and its northern edge runs close to the downtown shoreline. Our point checks put downtown, Hackley Park, Muskegon Heights and parts of Norton Shores inside it. Every commercial flight there needs FAA authorization, which a drone pilot requests through LAANC.

The ceiling is what shapes a shot list. The FAA facility map allows 400 feet over downtown and Hackley Park, 200 feet over Muskegon Heights, 100 feet in parts of Norton Shores and 0 feet over the airport and around the Lakes Mall in Fruitport Township. A retail or industrial shoot near the airport usually means lower angles or a separate FAA request filed well ahead.

West of downtown the picture changes. FAA data shows no controlled surface airspace over the middle of Muskegon Lake, North Muskegon, Pere Marquette Park or Muskegon State Park. Below 400 feet there, no LAANC request is needed, though we still check NOTAMs on the day.

State parks, city beaches and the channel

Muskegon State Park holds 3 miles of shoreline, 2 on Lake Michigan and 1 on Muskegon Lake, according to the DNR, along with two campgrounds and the year-round Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. The DNR’s rules require written permission for commercial drone use and bar flights over occupied beaches and campgrounds, and within 100 yards of cultural or historical structures, which covers the park’s CCC-built blockhouse. As of this fall, the DNR lists the channel walkway and its parking lot as closed for an Army Corps of Engineers project through Nov. 14, 2026. P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, south along the shore, falls under the same DNR rules.

Pere Marquette Park belongs to the City of Muskegon, so we contact the city before a paid shoot there. On summer weekends the beach is full, and Part 107 limits flights over people, so we time beach aerials for early morning.

Light, wind and seasons

Summer sunsets over Lake Michigan are the most requested light for beach, channel and waterfront listings. Early mornings give calmer water on Muskegon Lake and empty beaches. Fall color fills the dunes at Muskegon State Park, and winter brings luge, skating and snow on the dunes for a different kind of Muskegon drone video. Wind off Lake Michigan is the main weather check before we drive over, since gusts on the shore can ground a flight that would be fine inland.

Planning a Muskegon shoot

Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. We check the MKG facility map grid for that block, any DNR or city land nearby and the owner’s permission before we quote, and we group Muskegon work with Grand Haven or Holland when timing allows. See our Detroit drone photography services, including waterfront drone photography and industrial drone video, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Muskegon

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Muskegon State Park (Michigan DNR)

The DNR's state park rules require written department permission for any commercial drone flight and bar flights over occupied beaches, campgrounds and restrooms, and within 100 yards of a cultural or historical structure. That includes the park's blockhouse, which the DNR says was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s on the highest point in Muskegon County.

Channel walkway closure

The DNR says the Muskegon Lake channel walkway and its adjacent parking lot at the state park are closed for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project through Nov. 14, 2026. We plan channel and pier angles from other launch points until it reopens.

Pere Marquette Park and city parks

Pere Marquette Park is a City of Muskegon park. We contact the city before a paid shoot on city park land and keep flight paths off the beach when people are on it, since Part 107 limits flying over people.

Waterfront and industrial property

We launch only from private property with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not let a pilot use someone else's dock, lot or beach as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Muskegon

Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone in downtown Muskegon?
Yes. Downtown sits inside Muskegon County Airport's Class D airspace, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 400 feet. Pere Marquette Park, the channel and Muskegon State Park are outside the Class D, so no authorization is needed there below 400 feet.
Can you fly a drone at Muskegon State Park?
Only with written permission from the Michigan DNR for commercial work. Even with permission, the DNR bars flights over occupied beaches and campgrounds and within 100 yards of cultural or historical structures such as the park's 1930s blockhouse.
Why can't a drone fly near the Lakes Mall?
The FAA facility map ceiling there is 0 feet, the same as over Muskegon County Airport itself. LAANC cannot approve those flights, so a shoot in that area needs a separate FAA request with far more lead time, or a different vantage point.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Muskegon?
RAW Digital Group's FAA Part 107 certified drone pilots and videographers are based at its Detroit studio and travel to Muskegon for shoots. The drive is about 200 miles, roughly three and a half hours, and it has no Muskegon office, so each trip is scheduled around the weather off Lake Michigan.
How much does drone photography cost in Muskegon?
RAW Digital Group's published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
