Drone photography & video in Grand Haven

Grand Haven aerial photography centers on the mouth of the Grand River: the pier and its two lighthouses, the state park beach, the boardwalk, downtown and the Musical Fountain on Dewey Hill across the water. The airspace over town is uncontrolled, so our drone pilots plan Grand Haven shoots around DNR rules at the state park, crowds on the boardwalk and the ten days of the Coast Guard Festival.

Airspace

Flying in Grand Haven

Downtown Grand Haven, the state park, the pier, Dewey Hill, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg are uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, so drone flights below 400 feet there need no LAANC authorization. Controlled airspace around Muskegon County Airport begins a little over 2 miles north of downtown.

  • FAA Class Airspace data shows no controlled airspace at the surface over downtown, Grand Haven State Park, the south pier, the Musical Fountain on Dewey Hill, Spring Lake or Ferrysburg. Class E starts at 700 ft, above the 400 ft Part 107 limit.
  • FAA data returns no UAS facility map grids over the city itself, since there is no controlled surface airspace to authorize.
  • Grand Haven Memorial Airpark (3GM), owned by the City of Grand Haven about 2 miles southeast of downtown, has no control tower and no controlled surface airspace. We watch for arriving and departing aircraft on south side shoots, which have the right of way under Part 107.
  • Muskegon County Airport's Class D airspace begins a little over 2 miles north of downtown Grand Haven. Jobs up the shore toward Norton Shores need a LAANC check before launch.
  • Airspace and temporary flight restrictions change, especially around large events. We check B4UFLY or a LAANC app and current NOTAMs on the day of every flight.

What Grand Haven businesses film from the air

Nearly every aerial shot people want in Grand Haven includes the water. Homes and condos on Lake Michigan, the Grand River and Spring Lake sell on frontage, and a drone photo shows the view, the dock and the walk to the beach together. Downtown shops, restaurants and hotels use drone video to connect Washington Avenue to the boardwalk and the pier. Marinas and charter operators need the harbor in context. Builders on the edges of town want repeat progress flights from the same points.

The signature frame is the south pier with its two lighthouses running out into Lake Michigan. According to the DNR, both are visible from Grand Haven State Park and stand along the pier on the park’s northern boundary, which matters for where a drone can launch.

Uncontrolled airspace, busy ground

According to FAA Class Airspace data, Grand Haven has no controlled airspace at the surface. Downtown, the state park, the pier, Dewey Hill, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg are Class G up to Class E at 700 feet, and the FAA facility map has no grids over the city. A Part 107 flight below 400 feet here needs no LAANC request. For waterfront listings on Spring Lake and along the north shore of the river, that keeps the FAA side of the job simple.

Two airports shape the edges. Grand Haven Memorial Airpark (3GM), which AirNav lists as city owned and about 2 miles southeast of downtown, has no tower and no controlled airspace, so we simply watch for traffic. To the north, Muskegon County Airport’s Class D begins a little over 2 miles from downtown, and shoots up the shore toward Norton Shores need authorization.

State park, festival and fountain

Grand Haven State Park is Michigan DNR land, and its campground sits right on the sand beside the swim beach. DNR rules require written permission for commercial drone use and bar flights over occupied beaches, campgrounds and restrooms. Summer days leave little room, so we plan state park angles for early mornings or the shoulder seasons. P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, up the shore toward Muskegon, falls under the same DNR rules.

Grand Haven carries the title Coast Guard City, USA, designated by an act of Congress in 1998, according to the Coast Guard Festival. The festival runs ten days in late July and early August, and its 2026 edition ran July 24 to Aug. 2, according to the DNR. Crowds fill the waterfront that week. Across the river, the Musical Fountain on Dewey Hill plays at dusk from Memorial Day through Labor Day, according to Visit Grand Haven, and viewers gather along the boardwalk and at Waterfront Stadium, so twilight shoots there are planned around the show.

Light and seasons

Sunsets over Lake Michigan behind the pier are the most requested light in Grand Haven aerial photography. Morning brings calmer water on the river and Spring Lake and an empty beach. Fall color lines the Grand River and the dunes at Rosy Mound, and winter ice on the pier makes a strong subject on calm days. Wind off the lake is the main weather check before we make the trip.

Planning a Grand Haven shoot

Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. We check the airspace, nearby state or county land, the festival calendar and the owner’s permission before quoting, and we pair Grand Haven work with Muskegon or Holland when we can. See our Detroit drone photography services, including waterfront drone photography and event videography, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Grand Haven

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Grand Haven State Park (Michigan DNR)

The DNR describes the park as 48 acres on a half-mile of Lake Michigan shoreline at the mouth of the Grand River, with a modern campground next to the beach and two lighthouses on the pier along its northern boundary. DNR rules require written permission for commercial drone use and bar flights over occupied beaches and campgrounds, and within 100 yards of cultural or historical structures, which we apply to the pier lights.

Coast Guard Festival

The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival runs ten days around the turn of July and August, and its organizers put attendance at more than 350,000. For 2026, the DNR said it added park staff and conservation officers for the festival. Part 107 limits flying over crowds, so festival week is not the time for waterfront aerials without a plan built around the event.

Ottawa County Parks

Rosy Mound Natural Area, North Beach Park and Kirk Park along the lakeshore are Ottawa County parks. We contact the county parks office before a commercial shoot on county land.

Homes, marinas and businesses

We launch only from private property with the owner's written permission. Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances on flying, but it does not give a pilot the right to use someone else's dock, lot or beach as a launch site.

FAQ

Drone questions in Grand Haven

Do you need FAA authorization to fly a drone in Grand Haven?
Not below 400 feet in the city itself. FAA data shows downtown, the state park, the pier and Spring Lake in uncontrolled Class G airspace, so LAANC is not needed. Authorization is needed a little over 2 miles north of downtown, where Muskegon County Airport's Class D begins.
Can you fly a drone over the Grand Haven lighthouse and pier?
The pier lights sit on Grand Haven State Park's northern boundary, so a launch from the park needs written DNR permission, and DNR rules bar flights within 100 yards of cultural or historical structures. We usually film the pier from private property or from a distance that keeps the aircraft off the park and away from people on the pier.
Can a drone videographer film the Coast Guard Festival?
Only with a plan that keeps the aircraft away from the crowds. The festival draws more than 350,000 people over ten days, according to its organizers, and Part 107 limits flying over people. We check for temporary flight restrictions that week and work with event organizers on any approved coverage.
Where can I hire a drone pilot in Grand Haven?
RAW Digital Group's FAA Part 107 certified drone pilots are based at its Detroit studio and travel to Grand Haven. The drive is about 190 miles, a little over three hours, and it has no Grand Haven office, so each trip is scheduled around wind and weather on Lake Michigan.
How much does drone photography cost in Grand Haven?
RAW Digital Group's published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
