Drone photography & video in Traverse City

Traverse City aerial photography is mostly about water: West and East Grand Traverse Bay, resort shoreline, vineyards on Old Mission and Leelanau, and waterfront homes. Almost all of the city sits inside Cherry Capital Airport's controlled airspace, so every drone video and photo flight here starts with FAA authorization and a check of how high that block allows.

Airspace

Flying in Traverse City

Downtown Traverse City and most of the surrounding bayfront are inside Cherry Capital Airport's Class D airspace, so commercial drone flights need FAA authorization, usually through LAANC. Allowed altitudes range from 400 feet on the west side to zero near the airport.

  • Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) sits about 2 miles southeast of downtown. FAA data shows Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 ft MSL over downtown, the Open Space, Grand Traverse Commons, the Bayshore on West Bay and the resort strip at Acme.
  • FAA facility map ceilings are 150 ft over downtown, Clinch Park and the Open Space; 400 ft at Grand Traverse Commons, the west side and along West Bay toward Greilickville; 100 ft and then 0 ft moving east along the bayfront toward the airport.
  • The ceiling is 0 ft at Northwestern Michigan College's main campus, the south end of Boardman Lake and Traverse City State Park on East Bay. Flights there need a separate FAA DroneZone request, not LAANC.
  • TVC's tower runs 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in winter and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in summer, according to the FAA airport record published by AirNav. When it closes, FAA data shows surface Class E taking over, which still requires authorization.
  • Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City flies MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopters out of the airport, so low helicopter traffic over the bays is normal. We keep a visual observer on the sky for waterfront shoots.
  • The Class D ends a few miles up Old Mission Peninsula and short of Suttons Bay on Leelanau. From Bowers Harbor north, and around Suttons Bay, FAA data shows uncontrolled Class G at the surface, where no LAANC is needed below 400 ft.

What Traverse City businesses film from the air

Many Traverse City businesses are selling a view, and aerial photography is the clearest way to show one. Resorts and hotels along East Bay at Acme and the Bayshore on West Bay need drone video that shows the beach, the water and the distance to downtown. The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail lists ten wineries, and the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail says it has more than 20, and vineyard rows running down to the bay are a natural subject for drone video. Wedding venues across the region add venue tours and event coverage. Waterfront and second-home listings on both bays, and on the peninsulas, round out the work.

Redevelopment is the other thread. Grand Traverse Commons, the former state hospital that opened in 1885, is described by Grand Traverse County as the largest historic redevelopment effort in the United States. Its long Victorian buildings and the wooded natural area behind them read best from above.

Cherry Capital’s airspace shapes the shot list

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace data, Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) has Class D airspace from the surface to 3,100 feet MSL, and it covers downtown, both bayfronts near the city and the Acme resort strip. Every commercial flight there needs FAA authorization, which a drone videographer usually requests through LAANC.

The ceiling on that authorization changes quickly. The FAA’s UAS facility map allows 150 feet over Front Street, Clinch Park and the Open Space, which is enough for a bay-to-downtown establishing shot but not a high overview. It opens up to 400 feet at Grand Traverse Commons, on the west side and along West Bay toward Greilickville. Moving east along the bay the grid drops to 100 feet and then to zero, and it is also zero at Northwestern Michigan College’s main campus and Traverse City State Park. A zero grid means a separate FAA DroneZone request with much longer lead time, so we check the exact block before quoting.

Two more local factors. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City flies rescue helicopters from the airport, so we watch for low traffic over the water. And the tower is not staffed overnight, but the FAA’s data shows surface Class E taking over when it closes, so night and twilight flights still need authorization.

State and federal land around the bays

The biggest no-fly area near Traverse City is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Its 2026 Superintendent’s Compendium bans launching, landing or operating drones on National Park Service lands and waters without written approval from the superintendent. For Leelanau clients near the park, we launch from private land well outside the boundary and keep the flight path off park property.

Michigan state parks carry their own rule. DNR Land Use Order 5.1 prohibits drone use for a commercial purpose in a state park without written DNR permission, and bans flying over occupied beaches and campgrounds. Traverse City State Park and Leelanau State Park both fall under it. The park at Mission Point Lighthouse also posts that drones are not allowed.

Light, seasons and festival week

Summer gives resort and winery work long evenings and low, warm light over West Bay. Late September and October bring harvest and fall color on the peninsulas, and winter aerials show resorts and shoreline under snow. The National Cherry Festival, which lists July 3 to 10 for 2027, calls itself a no drone zone and fills the Open Space and bayfront with crowds, so we book downtown work outside that week.

Planning a Traverse City shoot

Send the address, date window and what you need to deliver. We check the TVC facility map grid, any state or federal land nearby and the landowner’s permission before sending a quote. Permissions

Where to launch in Traverse City

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

The lakeshore's 2026 Superintendent's Compendium, issued under 36 CFR 1.5, bans launching, landing or operating drones from or on National Park Service lands and waters inside the park unless the superintendent approves it in writing. We do not fly there, and we keep launches for nearby Leelanau properties outside the park boundary.

Michigan state parks

DNR Land Use Order 5.1 bars drone flights in state parks for a commercial purpose without written DNR permission, and prohibits flying over occupied beaches and campgrounds or within 100 yards of historic sites. That covers Traverse City State Park on East Bay and Leelanau State Park at the tip of the peninsula.

Mission Point Lighthouse

The park around the lighthouse at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula posts that drones are not allowed. Vineyard and winery shoots on the peninsula launch from the property owner's land with written permission.

National Cherry Festival

The festival calls itself a no drone zone. It fills the Open Space and downtown bayfront for eight days each July, with an air show over West Bay, so we do not schedule downtown or bayfront flights that week.

Resorts, wineries and homes

Michigan's drone law (PA 436 of 2016) stops local ordinances from regulating flight, but it does not give a pilot the right to use private land. We launch only with the owner's written permission.

FAQ

Drone questions in Traverse City

Can you fly a drone in downtown Traverse City?
Yes, with FAA authorization. Downtown sits inside Cherry Capital Airport's Class D airspace, where the FAA facility map allows LAANC approvals up to 150 feet over Front Street, Clinch Park and the Open Space. Higher shots need a separate FAA request, and we avoid the downtown bayfront entirely during the National Cherry Festival.
Can I fly a drone at Sleeping Bear Dunes?
No. The National Park Service's compendium for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore prohibits launching, landing or operating drones on park lands and waters without the superintendent's written approval. That applies to commercial drone videographers and hobbyists alike.
Do you have drone pilots in Traverse City?
RAW Digital Group's FAA Part 107 certified pilots are based at its Detroit studio and travel to Traverse City for shoots. The drive is about 255 miles, roughly four and a half to five hours, so we plan northern Michigan projects as scheduled trips rather than same-day calls.
How much does drone photography cost in Traverse City?
RAW Digital Group's published starting prices are aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500. Travel outside Metro Detroit is quoted with the project, and we can pair shoots in the same area to share the trip.
Do winery shoots on Old Mission Peninsula need airport authorization?
It depends how far up the peninsula the property is. The first few miles of Old Mission sit inside Cherry Capital's Class D, where we file LAANC. FAA data shows uncontrolled Class G airspace from around Bowers Harbor north, so most vineyard flights there need landowner permission but no airspace authorization.
