Drone photography & video in Sandusky

Sandusky aerials take in Sandusky Bay, the Cedar Point peninsula, the downtown bayfront and the ferry lanes to Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay. FAA data shows open Class G airspace across the area, so the planning here is about who owns the launch site: an amusement park operator, the state, a national memorial and the city each have their own rules.

Airspace

Flying in Sandusky

FAA data shows downtown Sandusky, the Bayfront, Cedar Point, Marblehead, Port Clinton and both Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay as uncontrolled Class G airspace at the surface, with no UAS facility map grid at any point we checked. A Part 107 flight under 400 feet there needs no LAANC authorization.

  • Griffing Sandusky Airport, which once sat on the bay southeast of downtown, has closed and no longer appears in the FAA's airport data. FAA airspace data still shows Class E airspace beginning 700 feet above the ground over the city, well above the 400 foot drone ceiling, and Class G below it.
  • Erie-Ottawa International Airport (PCW) in Port Clinton, about 8 nautical miles northwest of downtown Sandusky, is the region's main public airport. FAA Class Airspace data shows no Class D or other controlled airspace at its surface, only Class E from 700 feet, so LAANC does not apply. We still watch its traffic pattern and give way to manned aircraft.
  • Put-in-Bay Airport (3W2) on South Bass Island and Kelleys Island Land Field (89D) are both public airports with no controlled airspace at the surface in FAA data. Island flights near either runway are planned around their traffic, and manned aircraft have the right of way.
  • Restricted areas R-5502A and R-5502B, listed in FAA data under La Carne near Camp Perry, start at the surface and extend over the lake north and west of Port Clinton. FAA data schedules R-5502A from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day April through November and Tuesday through Thursday the rest of the year, and R-5502B from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Either can be activated at other times by a NOTAM issued 48 hours ahead. Their eastern edge sits close to the route between Port Clinton and the islands, so we check their status before any flight on that side of the bay.
  • The FAA lists a national security UAS flight restriction from the surface to 400 feet over U.S. Coast Guard Station Marblehead, on the peninsula west of the lighthouse. We keep out of it.
  • Cedar Point has no standing FAA flight restriction in the data we checked, but Part 107 bars flying over people who are not part of the operation, and temporary flight restrictions can be issued for events. We check B4UFLY or a LAANC app and current NOTAMs on the day of every flight.

What Sandusky businesses film from the air

Sandusky is built around water, and most aerial work here starts with the bay. Cedar Point fills the end of a 364-acre peninsula across from downtown, with what its operator calls a mile-long sandy beach on the lake side and Hotel Breakers, Castaway Bay and two marinas on its list of places to stay and dock. Resorts, hotels, waterparks and vacation rentals along the shore need video that shows how close they sit to the lake, and that is hard to do from the ground.

Downtown, the Bayfront and the city’s Jackson Street Pier and Paper District Marina face the same water. Marinas, boat clubs and waterfront listings use aerials to show slips, channels and the walk to town. Out on the islands, ferry operators run from Sandusky, Marblehead, Catawba and Port Clinton, and Jet Express lists direct routes from its Sandusky dock on West Shoreline Drive to Cedar Point and Kelleys Island. Island businesses, rentals and tourism groups use aerials to show the lake.

Open airspace, with three exceptions

According to the FAA’s Class Airspace and UAS facility map data, every point we checked from Huron to Port Clinton and out to Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay is Class G at the surface, with no LAANC grid. Griffing Sandusky Airport no longer appears in the FAA’s airport data, and Erie-Ottawa International in Port Clinton has no controlled airspace at its surface.

Three things still shape a flight plan. Restricted areas R-5502A and R-5502B start at the surface near Camp Perry and reach over the lake north and west of Port Clinton, active on a published schedule or by NOTAM. A national security flight restriction covers U.S. Coast Guard Station Marblehead. And 14 CFR 107.39 bars flying over people who are not part of the operation unless they are under cover, in a stationary vehicle or the flight fits an operations-over-people category. The FAA’s list of airspace restrictions covers stadiums, airports, special use airspace and emergencies; it does not include amusement parks, so the controls at Cedar Point come from the operator and the people-over rule.

Who controls the launch site

Ground permission matters more than airspace here. Six Flags operates Cedar Point, and its policy pages for other parks prohibit drones on, from or above its premises without written consent; Cedar Point’s code of conduct also bars photography that disrupts guests or operations. We fly the park only with the operator’s written approval.

State parks need permission from the Division of Parks and Watercraft under Ohio Administrative Code 1501:46-13-11. That covers Kelleys Island State Park, which ODNR says covers nearly 700 acres and includes the Glacial Grooves State Memorial, East Harbor State Park and Marblehead Lighthouse State Park. At Put-in-Bay, the National Park Service compendium for Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial bars drones without the superintendent’s written approval. Erie MetroParks rules require a written permit to land any aviation apparatus on or next to park land and for any commercial activity. Our Ohio drone laws guide covers the state statute.

Seasons, wind and travel

Demand here follows the lake season. Cedar Point runs HalloWeekends in the fall, and island ferry service thins out after summer: in early October, Jet Express was running weekends only from Port Clinton. Busy beaches, docks and midways make people-over planning harder, so we schedule early mornings and weekdays where we can. Open water means wind, and we hold a backup date for any shoot over the bay or the islands.

Downtown Sandusky is about 116 miles from our studio on Hunt Street by road, roughly two hours and 20 minutes without traffic. Our FAA Part 107 pilots drive down for each shoot, travel is quoted with the project, and Sandusky work can pair with a stop in Toledo on the same trip.

Planning a Sandusky shoot

Send the address, date window and deliverables. Before we quote, we check FAA data for the exact launch point, the Camp Perry range schedule, state park, memorial and city rules, and the landowner’s permission. See our Detroit drone photography services, including waterfront drone photography and hotel and resort aerials, or contact us to start.

Permissions

Where to launch in Sandusky

We handle permissions and permits as part of every quote.

Cedar Point

Cedar Point is private property operated by Six Flags. Its code of conduct bars unsolicited photography or video that disrupts guests or park operations, and Six Flags policy pages for its other parks prohibit any drone on, from or above its premises without specific written consent. We fly the park, the beach or Hotel Breakers only with the operator's written approval, and we film the skyline from private property across the bay with the owner's permission.

Kelleys Island, East Harbor and Marblehead state parks

Ohio Administrative Code 1501:46-13-11 bars drones within a state park without permission from the chief of the Division of Parks and Watercraft or an authorized agent, requires that permission to film park features or facilities, and bans flights over beaches, boats, roadways and crowds in those parks. That covers Kelleys Island State Park, East Harbor State Park and Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.

Perry's Victory memorial

The National Park Service compendium for Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, approved July 17, 2026, prohibits launching, landing or operating a drone from or on park lands and waters at Put-in-Bay unless the superintendent approves it in writing.

Erie MetroParks

Erie MetroParks rules (Resolution 1989-12, last amended in 2014) do not name drones, but they bar landing any aircraft or other apparatus for aviation in or next to park land without a written permit from the executive director, bar engine-powered model airplanes without a permit, and require a written permit for any commercial activity in a park. We ask the district before using a MetroPark as a launch site.

City of Sandusky

We did not find a drone rule or a film permit on the City of Sandusky's website. The city requires a Special Event Permit for events in public parks or on public property with concerts, sales or vendors, and recommends applying 30 days ahead. We treat city parks, Jackson Street Pier and the city marina as city property and ask before we launch there.

FAQ

Drone questions in Sandusky

Do you need LAANC to fly a drone in Sandusky?
Not at the points we checked. FAA data shows downtown Sandusky, the Bayfront, Cedar Point, Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay as Class G airspace at the surface with no UAS facility map grid, so LAANC does not apply. Griffing Sandusky Airport has closed, and Erie-Ottawa International in Port Clinton has no controlled airspace at the surface.
Can you fly a drone over Cedar Point?
Only with the park operator's written consent. Six Flags, which operates Cedar Point, prohibits drones on, from or above its premises without specific written consent in the policies it publishes for its other parks, and Cedar Point's own code of conduct bars photography that disrupts guests or park operations. Part 107 limits flights over people. Without that approval, we film the skyline from private property across Sandusky Bay with the landowner's permission.
Can you fly a drone at Put-in-Bay?
Over private land, yes, with the owner's permission, and FAA data shows the island as Class G airspace. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is different: the National Park Service prohibits drones there without the superintendent's written approval. Restricted areas off Camp Perry, west of the island, can also be active, so we check them before each flight.
Are drones allowed in Ohio state parks around Sandusky?
Only with permission from the Ohio Division of Parks and Watercraft. That applies at Kelleys Island, East Harbor and Marblehead Lighthouse state parks, including any filming of park features, and drones may not fly over beaches, boats, roadways or crowds in those parks.
Do you have drone pilots in Sandusky?
RAW Digital Group's office is in Detroit, and it works with a network of crew and creator contacts across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Windsor. Our FAA Part 107 pilots travel from the Detroit studio, about 116 miles from downtown Sandusky by road. Our published starting prices apply: aerial photo from $450, aerial video from $1,500 and FPV fly-through from $2,500, with travel quoted with the project.
