Construction progress drone photography means flying the same site on a schedule, usually weekly, biweekly or monthly, and capturing the same angles each time so progress reads at a glance. Developers use it for investor updates, leasing and marketing. General contractors use it to document work and keep teams aligned. Expect fixed-point stills, orbit video, top-down shots and milestone content, at a national rate of about $500 to $2,000 per visit according to UAV Coach’s April 2026 pricing guide.
Why developers and GCs use it
Contractors are already flying. In its Drone Usage Survey Report, Associated Builders and Contractors found that 36.1% of member companies responding to its May 2026 survey fly drones. Among those, 80.8% use them for site progress monitoring, 77.5% for marketing and media and 50% for inspections. DroneLife reported the findings in August 2026.
That overlap between documentation and marketing is the point. One well-planned flight can serve several audiences:
- Owners, investors and lenders want proof that the schedule is real.
- Leasing and sales teams need current imagery long before the building is finished.
- The public and the press follow big projects, especially in a city watching its skyline change.
- The project team uses an overhead view to see staging, access and sequencing problems.
Choosing a cadence
The right frequency depends on how fast the site changes and who is watching.

Monthly is the common baseline for investor updates. Fast phases and marketing pushes justify more.
Repeatable waypoints and matching angles
A progress series only works if the shots match. When the angle drifts between visits, the viewer compares camera positions instead of construction.
We set fixed capture points on the first flight and repeat them every visit. Each point records:
- GPS position and altitude
- Heading and camera tilt
- Lens or zoom setting
- Time of day, so shadows fall the same way
Most camera drones can save these as waypoint missions and fly them again. We still check the framing by eye against the previous set, because a small change in altitude reads as a big change in the image. As the building rises, we keep the original points for comparison and add new ones where the structure creates better angles.
What you get: typical deliverables
- Fixed-point stills. The core of the series, shot from the same set of points every visit.
- Orbit video. A slow circle around the structure, useful for updates and social posts.
- Top-down shots. Straight-down views that show footprint, staging and site logistics.
- Time-lapse compilation. The fixed-point stills cut together into a sequence showing months of work in seconds.
- Milestone content. Groundbreaking, topping out, facade completion and ribbon cutting, often with ground video and people.
- View studies. Stills and video from the heights of future floors, so leasing teams can show what a unit will look out on.
Site safety and access
Active construction sites are among the most controlled places a drone pilot works. Expect:
- Site-specific safety orientation before the first flight, and sign-in on every visit
- PPE such as a hard hat, high-visibility vest, safety glasses and boots, as the site requires
- Coordination with the superintendent on flight windows, launch zones and radio contact
- Crane coordination. Tower and mobile cranes are the tallest moving obstacles on site, so the pilot confirms lift schedules and keeps clear of loads and booms
Flying over workers is regulated. Under 14 CFR 107.39, a drone may not operate over a person who is not participating in the operation unless they are under a covered structure or in a stationary vehicle, or the flight meets one of the FAA’s operations-over-people categories. Category 3 allows flight over a closed or restricted-access site where everyone is on notice that a drone may fly over them, but only with an aircraft listed on an FAA-accepted declaration of compliance for that category. Separate limits apply to flying over people inside moving vehicles, such as equipment operators. In practice, most progress flights are planned around crews: routes along the perimeter, capture points outside active work zones, and flights timed for breaks or shift changes.
Height rules help on tall projects. Under 14 CFR 107.51, a drone may fly higher than 400 feet above ground if it stays within a 400-foot radius of a structure and no more than 400 feet above its top. Sites near Coleman A. Young International Airport may also need FAA airspace authorization before any flight.
Put the drone in the site plan. Add flight windows and the launch zone to the superintendent's schedule the way you would a delivery. Flights go faster, and nobody is surprised by a drone overhead.
Marketing imagery vs. mapping data
Progress photography and drone mapping use similar aircraft but produce different things.
Progress photography is about pictures: stills and video framed for people to look at, in updates, decks and ads. Mapping, or photogrammetry, flies automated grid patterns with heavy image overlap and processes the results into orthomosaic maps, 3D models and volume measurements. Accurate mapping usually adds positioning corrections such as RTK or PPK and ground control points. ABC’s survey found 21.9% of drone-using contractors fly with RTK or PPK positioning systems.
If you need measurements, cut-and-fill volumes or as-built comparisons, scope a mapping service separately. Survey-grade work that engineers or legal documents will rely on usually involves a licensed surveyor. Progress photography does not replace that.
How it feeds leasing and investor updates
A consistent series pays off well beyond the job trailer.
- Investor and lender updates. Two or three matched stills and a short clip each month show progress faster than a written report.
- Leasing and sales. Real progress images next to renderings make a future building feel concrete, and view studies answer the question every tenant asks.
- Social and press. Milestones like topping out and facade reveals are natural posts, and the time-lapse becomes launch content.
- Community relations. Neighbors and city partners see steady, visible progress.

What it costs
UAV Coach’s April 2026 pricing guide lists construction drone work at $500 to $2,000 per periodic visit and $1,000 to $3,000 per project. At those per-visit rates, a monthly program over 12 months works out to $6,000 to $24,000 before extras, and a biweekly program roughly doubles that.
What moves the number: cadence, site size, how many capture points, whether each visit includes edited video or just stills, time-lapse editing, milestone shoots with ground crews, and travel. Many providers price recurring programs as a package. Ask for a per-visit breakdown either way so you can compare quotes. Our drone photography cost guide covers the wider market.
Questions to ask a provider
- Will the same pilot fly every visit? If not, how are capture points documented so anyone can repeat them?
- Has the pilot worked on active sites, and can they provide a certificate of insurance that meets your GC’s requirements?
- How are weather cancellations rescheduled so the cadence holds?
- What is delivered after each visit, how fast, and in what formats?
- Can you use the time-lapse and milestone video in paid ads, and for how long?
